hi,, needin to replace my ailing viscous fan on p38 diesel,,98...does any other fan unit fit,,ie; 300tdi ,,ive been told..??,,ta,,

If you have aircon, the condensor fans can be used instead of the Viscous fan for cooling. I can supply a mod to do this if you are interested.

Unfortunately Microcat only lists the fan and viscous coupling as one unit and it costs about £120.
If your fan is OK and you are a tight arse like me you can change just the viscous unit. You need part number ERR2266 which yes is also used on 300tdi/90/110.
Cost me just £20 new on Ebay.

It is held on with 4 bolts which have dome heads! Obviously not intended for repairing.
I loosened them with a bit if difficulty using a center punch and mole grips on the heads.
I also used Loctite thread sealant on the bolts just in case when I put it back.

I have done the aircon fan mod using an Xeng temperature switch in the radiator outlet and also with a manual override. It certainly helps cooling but when heavy towing with a chipped diesel it isn't enough. My DSE used to overheat on steep inclines pulling about 2 tonnes. Solo it would probably be OK.

I would suggest then that you have a cooling problem, the fans are more than adequate if the rest of the system is good. Sludged up rad, thermostat sticking or water pump breaking up. It could also be the first sign of a cracked head:eek:

Datatek:
I can only base my comments on what I have found with my car when I have progressively renewed all of the cooling system components over the past year:

new thermostat (big improvement)/new water pump/new radiator
Aircon fan mod (car was still overheating occasionally towing up long steep climbs)
M3 expansion tank mod.
Final job - change the viscous fan. Problem solved! No further overheating.

I have pressure tested the cooling system and it is not loosing any water. I hope I don't temp fate but it doesn't have a cracked head.:)

hi,could u plz clarify,,when my 2,5d p38 is standing cold,,should i b able to spin the viscous fan freely or wot..??..ta..

hi,thx wammers...when sitting cold i can hardly turn my viscous fan,i assume viscouse unit is needing replaced,,??..ta...

They are often a bit stiff to turn when cold as the silicone gel stiffens up. When you start the engine from cold the fan will usually roar for a few seconds indicating it is running at full speed until the gel liquifies it should then become quiet. If you stop the engine at this point you should find it fairly easy to turn. Then as the temperature rises, the bimetalic control on the front of the unit effectively causes the unit to lock up again:)

Where was this explanation a year or so back when I was busy covering my drive, my hedge, the road outside and my neighbour's garden, in shredded newspapers?
