Hi all,

So my 2.5 petrol engine has decided it doesn't want to keep all of it's fly wheel teeth and has destroyed a good 5inch stretch of said teeth champion!!

So this is putting a spanner in the works regarding getting my land on the road for a summer of weekends towing the trailer tent and camping....

Currently finding a flywheel is proving a nightmare... So my other option is an untested 19j that I got my brother as a wedding gift for his series which he no longer wants....

Just wondering what wiring issues I might face a d any other problems I may have if I end up going down this route? Anything that might be worth "upgrading" on the engine while it's out etc or any gems of wisedom people who have done a similar conversion would be greatly appreciated

As would your thoughts on the 19j in general.

There is no wiring on a 19j, apart from the fuel shut off solenoid and the wires to the starter and alternator.
They aren't a great engine, but they are adequate, provided you don't expect huge road performance. Be careful you change the oil regularly, and your cooling system is working properly. It is worth changing the oil cooler stat in the filter housing adaptor, nobody ever does this.

Probably worth giving it a go if the engine is free, at least you could run it for a while while you have the 2.5P done up.

Thanks for the reply turboman,

There's a couple of engines locally that I've enquired about but if nothing comes of them I'll go with the 19j...

I've heard fitting an intercooler and oil cooler can help with the over heating issues they suffer etc?

They don't have an intercooler, and I wouldn't bother fitting one, mine never overheated. There is an oilcooler in the radiator of a 19j, and it should be fitted and piped, and it is worth changing the stat for it, as I posted above.

Ok thanks for the Info... The 19j I have was just the engine no rad etc so I will retro fit an oil cooler of some sort see how I get on.

I am not sure if there is one in the rad for your 2.5P.
If not, worth getting the right rad, the oil cooler is more efficient for being immersed in water, and more effective at low speeds.

Why not just renew the ring gear on your fly wheel
Original part number ERC5293 Turners have the part

Blackburn you hero

You may have just saved me alot of time !! Went to my local land Rover store they couldn't find it anywhere said it wasnt available anymore... Local land Rover breakers both didn't have any! I looked only could find the right one just V8 ones and diesel ones...

Thanks again...

I don't agree. It will be a long time before diesel is dead. Sure, road tax and fuel costs will increase and we will be penalised so much for using them in cities that people will find other means of propulsion, however, I cannot see diesels disappearing any time soon in the rural communities or commercial applications.

Think that is about right. And I can't really see petrol engined cars lasting long in inner cities either. The policy makers are determined to drastically reduce private car use in cities over the next few decades, and TBH, I don't have a problem with that.

You will need the rad as well, the petrol rad wont bleed properly and it will be cheaper than buying an oil cooler and mounting it. You will need a switch and relay for the heat plugs, 6 seconds on the plugs, dont listen to the eeejits stating they need 40 seconds, 40 seconds will kill glow plugs fast, that's why they need 40 seconds! Your tank will work but you need the 19j plumbing and fuel filter, plus you need the air filter and housing. Mountings are the same, ignition live to the fuel cut off or it wont run, make sure its an ignition live or you wont be able to switch it off! The engine harness should be with the engine. If you need info on glow plug wiring pm me, its straight forward but if you get the wire size or relay amp rating wrong you could let the smoke out. You may well benefit from a better battery to deal with starting a diesel. Exhaust is different, all of it. Its not straight forward and a bit more than just replacing the engine.

I need at least 40-50 seconds of glowplugs for mine brand new glowplugs

compression is probably lower than should be
Tbh its ****ed 19j changed turbo better red terminal goes red with heat no exhaust ****ing out diesel and oil air getting in fuel the bleed screw on the injector pump broke
Overheating changed rad
No lights been fixing the front wiring need to do the back now had new crossmember which is non existing with rust basicly two pieces left without a hole outriggers gone hole in the floor
Clutch on way out gears are everywhere
Half a turn of play in steering
Brakes are gone
Altenator gone up in smoke
Low compression is least of my worries

at least you know why,the whole thing is worn out

Hello
What problems could arise if the oil cooler thermostat was faulty.
