1987 2.5 na Xmod engine head rebuilt a few years ago does not use oil or water checked the air filter it is clean.
This came to me with engine in green paint likely rebuilt fuel pump was rebuilt before I got it.
The rest of truck was a mess but engine has been good until this year starting to smoke.
A little rough starting maybe glow plugs but it continues to smoke even when warm?
Assuming maybe need to check the timing?
The fuel pump timing pin I have for repairs is stuck in a 200tdi fuel pump I removed from 110 assuming I may need that.
How does one remove a stuck pin in fuel pump?
But have to read up on timing procedure.

It could be a duff injector, to test crack off each in turn, engine will run a little rough. A faulty one cracked off will make little difference.

I was told by marine mechanic to replace the injectors, you are looking at same.
They have been rebuilt twice.
Would the injector for 2.5 na vary per engine number?
& are Britpart injectors okay?
I will do the test & see.

Pretty sure injectors for the 12j engine are all the same. As they have been rebuilt and things still the same time for a compression test to see if a cylinder has an issue'

I have been looking for the diesel compression test procedure in manual have not done this & need the tool.
The tool cost as much as a set of injectors unless there is a kit that is specific size for 2.5 or 200tdi?

Over here one can get a basic diesel compression test kit for about 30/40 bucks of your notes.
Pretty straight forward, disconnect stop solenoid so engine will not start. Fit gauge to an injector port using one of the adaptors in kit [or on some engines to the glowplug hole, not recommended for 200tdi] Turn engine over and note first reading and then final reading after 3/4 turns. Have you done the injector test?

Injector test I was looking for in shop manual?
Each injector has two nuts loosen each with injector loose start motor.
Assuming one would stop motor secure injector & go to next one?

Do not loosen injector, it will not give any test result.
I was once trying to remove an injector that was stuck and usual pulling had failed. I had taken nuts off and then forgot to put heavy canvas over engine to catch the injector when engine was turned over. It did an Elvis and left the building:) Still have the hole in my workshop roof.
Anyway injector/cylinder test. Start engine and allow to warm until it runs as normal. [as it can]
On each injector there is the fuel delivery pipe connection, slacken one at a time until fuel dribbles out.
With no pressure to that injector engine will now slow and run rough on the other three.
If you come to one where there is little change in the running then that is the problem cylinder.
It may be the injector [ unlikely in your case ] or possible valve issue or piston is not sealing

Diesel squirting under pressure is dangerous. Diesel dermatitis is no fun.

I agree why I was looking thru manual, thank you!
Manual does mention improper fuel atomization one cause for smoking.
I will do this on weekend marine mechanic point was rebuilt injectors may not work properly I believe.

Cracked each injector each one had the same stuttering effect.

This engine does not has not used oil when the head was off the cylinders were very clean.
Not a high use vehicle either always trying to fix something.

Assuming timing of which I am looking for in manual.

The smoke is reduced each time I back off the fuel connection, engine is running rough at that point.
The block heaters I have not checked either.
