I have a North America '96 Discovery SD with R380 4.0. My question is this; I found a 2.5 NA out '88 Defender (for cheap), is it a direct fit after changing bell house, Input shaft and slave cylinder rod? Will there be any gearing issues from the petro to diesel?

There will, but I would have to look it up to tell you figures. Forum search or google the ratios in the different boxes and axles. easy to work out.
Another issue is it will be very underpowered.

People fit in series, but a series don't weigh near as much as that Disco!

Will it be able to move with a non turbo diesel?

Don't see why not, 2.5na makes about 65 horse, and it all depends on gearings.
But I don't think it will move very fast!

OK in a series but anything heavier would I expect be painfull.

Yes, quite nice in a series, ok in a light Ninety, but I would guess agonisingly slow in a 2 ton Disco with a family and two pit bulls!

No, no, no & no again. Have you ever been in a tdi with the intercooler pipe off? It's more gutless than a gutless thing. It would be doable but I cannot think of reason why??

I had the intercooler pipe off mine a couple of times!!!! No way would I fit an NA diesel. Gutless.
