Hi all,

I've got a 1987 110 Defender Utility with the 2.5 petrol engine, and I've been looking at replacing it with a 300TDi engine from a Discovery.

I'm essentially looking for better performance, acceleration/top speed etc.
Saving a few pennies on MPG would be nice too! Though I know it's always going to be expensive to run.

I've been given some conflicting advice, and have also been told that an LPG conversion for the petrol engine currently in the Landy would be a better bet than the diesel conversion, as the diesel wouldn't add a noticeable performance increase.

Which option would you guys take? I've been leaning toward the diesel myself but would like some more opinions. How well does the 300Tdi pull the 110 etc?

Sorry for the long post, appreciate any help greatly.

Cheers! :D

300 tdi would be wonderful, pulls very well and is economical, should get 30mpg easy depending on the gearing.:)

According to LRO list 2.5 petrol has got 80hp and does around 18 mpg whereas a 300tdi has 111hp and 27.5 mpg and I bet you'd get a replacement engine cheaper than a decent lpg conversion. I suppose it depends on how much you use it

You could also follow my new thread about duel fueling with veg oil. No difference in performance but 80p a litre.

There's a guy not far from me who sells ready to use straight in the tank biodiesel for 90p per litre:D and he even delivers it to my door, 200 litres for £180. Flippin' result

That's good. The kit for making it is quite expensive. Including the 2nd tank I'm hoping the whole veg conversion is going to cost about £400.

Can't fault it, he makes it with new oil so it's nice and clear. I was paying a quid a litre for veg oil in the summer, so it's spot on

Nice :D

Any chance of details I'm not too far from you and would be interested
