Under normal driving conditions my temp gauge stays around midway in the white section.

While towing 3.5 tons about 12 weeks ago my 1995 2.5 DT decided to over heat into the red and the warning light came on. I purchased a new rad about 10 weeks ago but didn't fit it straight away, I didn't have a over heating problem unless I was towing over 2 tons.

Today I pulled the old oem rad, fitted a new rad, new thermostat and new drive belts.

Just out of interest I weighed the old rad 9 kg, the new one weighs 6.4 kg, that's 2.6 kg's approx of crap in the old radiator.

I know some might say that an aftermarket pattern rad maybe not up to the build standard of OEM, but a 2.6 kg difference.

After a 20 mile drive the temp still stays in middle of the white, but is now a more stable reading, I will update this after some towing and possibly stripping the old rad just to see how blocked it is.

Oh no you don't!

Max vehicle weight for a Defender 90 = 2,400kgs
MAM for a Defender = 5,900kgs

Thats a maximum permissable trailer mass of 3,500kgs...

Yer don't need a Lorry... yer need a Land Rover ;)

Yep!! that add's up, 3.5 tons Gross train weight, that's about 1.5 tons on the tow bar, NOT 3.5 tons. You need a lorry for that amount of weight.

Rob

The trailer with load weighed 3.5 ton plus the kerb weight of the tow vehicle (2115 kg my range) total weigh of about 5.6 ton (5615 KG).

A Land/Range Rover vehicles carry a dual purpose vehicle classification, which allows a high tow weight.

Land Rover state the max gross tow weight is 3.5 ton on the road this doesn't include the vehicle.

PS. Note to ones self "Stop making coffee half way through posting an answer"...:(

:D :p

Just fer those who're interested... Land Rover still has the highest legal GTW available for a Car/LGV... Next nearest is the Nissan Navara at a rather paltry 2,700kgs followed by the Isuzu Twooper at 2,600kgs... unless anyone knows different ?

Yer sums don't add up mate.
As a rule of thumb, you can't tow more than the towing vehicle's weight, 75% is good, 75% of 2.400kgs is not 3.500kgs. If you tow more than the towing vehicles weight you WILL get a classic case of 'the tail wagging the dog'

You do need a lorry for this kind of weight.

Rob.......know's his limits.

What about the Toyota Land Cruiser, they are pretty hefty vehicles, do they not have a capacity to tow a heavier load (have no idea about towing so I may just be talking sh*te!).
