Hi all
Haven't been on for a while as leant my P38 to Dad. I'm getting it back tomorow for a trip to Yorkshire soon.

Am after some advise. He's told me there is a slight leak coming from the top of the pump. He says it's from the very top cover where it bolts to pump. Not major but enough to bubble and allow derv to run back, resulting in alot of turning over of a morning. Have had a search and looks like I can't just remove the cover and fit a new seal as it effects the timing? Is this correct or is it just a "lid"? It looks like an upside down sump, but not sure if it's full of springs and bits or just a cover? Kind of hoping I can unbolt this lid and it's what is inside I can't touch!!!

Top cover plate can be removed and seal fitted no problem. However removing complete pump top with electrics attached to it will effect the fuel quantity if not replace exactly from where it came. Cannot effect the timing. Inside the cover is the fuel quantity servo potentiometer and stop and the fuel temp sensor.

By dads description it is the very top cover. Not the next section down.. Won't get to look at it till tomorrow, but if he's right, you reckon I can unbolt and change without worry?
Are the seals available? Or just buy the £25 kit off EBay?

I don't think it's leaking out is as much as a problem more the fact letting the derv run back, he says it's taking a bit of spinning over now if left a few days, and I'm heading north soon..

Andrew, do you mean removing the top cover is a nightmare or the next section down? Was kinda hoping remove the 4 bolts. New gasket and back on?
 
thats why i asked for a piccy , not gonna commit to saying it's easy if you may mean deeper in , i learnt the hard way doing a 300 pump , good job i had a spare , many on here as you know will tell you if it's easy or hard as long as they can see what you need to do , no one would like to see you make an expensive mistake

Top cover is easy but don't touch anything else. Next one down leave alone unless you really know what you are doing.

Will see where it's leaking from tomorrow. If its just from the top cover and is just a case of remove lid,replace seal then I will do it.
If it involves the next section down and adjustments etc, then that ain't for me. I'm game for a laugh and mechanically competent, but if there's a good chance of it not running again I'll stick it in somewhere
 
To be fair... That does look a little scary in there!!! Lol

As long as I can't screw nothing up taking just the top cover off I'm gonna have a go tomorrow.

There's a seal kit on EBay for £25 if LR don't sell just the top one

Positively tropical at 2.5C here today Tony, gave up work and stayed in the warm apart for going out to get more logs to feed the stove:)
 
I had both top and the seal below leak on mine and replaced both. You may need to remove the inlet manifold, so may be worth buying the gasket/seals for that, just in case. I went to a local Bosch diesel center in Colchester and got a full set of genuine seals (although only needed the two) for less then £10. If my memory is correct it was more like £5 to £6.

The top most seal is dead easy, the seal below takes more time but there are some good threads on here showing how to do it. Not a task for an amateur but anyone confident with an engine should be fine. I looked at it as I'd rather take the risk at fixing it myself for less the a tender, then pay the center £600 to remove the pump, replace seals, re-calibrate it and then re-fit it.

Bird table has been raped by squirrels and pigeons. Gun is coming out if they do much more. I'm going nowhere if i can help it. :):)

Only got red squirrels over here and they hibernate, pigeons are a pain though. Missus won't let me blow them away which I could do from the kitchen window:eek:
