Hi all, I brought a range rover p38 2.5 dse with a suspect dodgy hydrlic lifter, drove it 3hrs home and still no change, so changed.Oil and filter with no change.
so got another set of tappets, pulled head off and re-lapped in the valves, refitted and still no change......
Noticed a leak from rear of injection pump so replaced the pump and still no change!

It taps cold and hot and sounds top end and increases speed with engine speed.

I've searched every were but can't find any results.

Has any one else had this problem?

Could it be oil pressure? Only done 130k.

Little end or maybe cracked piston ring. Cracked piston ring on a diesel will give a noise similar to pinking on a petrol engine.

It's identical to a noisy tappet, I put a stethoscope on it to day, no. 3 injector (non wire) sounds like we're the tapping is coming from sounds very hollow compared to the others. Ill replace in the morning and see if this fixes it. Watch this space.....

Oh yea could have a Partial blockage not enough build up of oil to lift piston bucket allowing a gap

Yeah that is possible, but unlikely as he has just fitted new tappets and he still has the same noise he had before he fitted them..:)

Only thing I can think of is weak spring or worn lobe but spring is usually detectable at higher revs ??? What do you think wammers

Don't know i can only go on the OPs description. He is now saying he can hear an injector clicking. Not being stood next to it i don't know. Even then it might be difficult to pinpoint.
