Hi I have a 2.25 series 3 petrol that I have bought as a project

when I bought it they said it does run but there is a issue with the starter solenoid so I had it put on a trailer

got it back fitted a new starter solenoid, but I think I have a few more issues the dizzy has been swapped from a duecelier to a lucas I found the old one in the footwell it has had a new coil fitted and new plugs, the leads were all off the cap, I have tried to fire it up there is a spark at the points a spark at the plugs but its not having any of it a friend suggested giving it a sniff of easy start but all it does it bang from the carb and a puff of smoke

could it be the plug leads not correct im struggling because I really need to move it now

Lucas dizzy is an alternative and shouldn't be a problem. Firing order is cast into the inlet manifold, cylinders numbered front to back, no. 1 is fed from the dizzy connector that faces forward and is closest to the block, dizzy runs anti clockwise. Check the timing is OK, but the petrol engine will run (albeit badly) over a wide range of timing. Check there's a decent spark. If the ignition is running OK you can start looking at the carbs.

Sounds like a blocked jet in the carb and timing issues, but are the tappets set properly giving them a little play (5-10mm) might help with starting and will mean a definite timing issue (but don't keep running like this).
My engine gained more power doing this and only when the timing chain was changed did we know that the timing was all wrong, but it had not been changed since the factory 98xxx ago.
