Afternoon,

Looking to buy an approved used April 2016 Disco 4 with 38k on the clock. Just pulled the online service history up and according to that the car wasn't serviced until 5 days ago at 38k miles, thats 31 months and 38k without a 1st service.
Its priced low to be honest and im wondering if that's why.
Should I be running for the hills or looking at money off, extending the included 2 year warranty to 3 etc?

I haven't bought it yet. I know the VIN so can pull the service history up online (since 2013 apparently this can be done)

I have called to query it, but i could hear him just shrugging his shoulders.

If it's LR Approved Used I'd ask them to prove the service history and see if they can explain what you have found.

Mmm. But that's not good enough .... If it was only a fiver, you wouldn't be too worried ... but I'm guessing it's a bit more ;)

+1 - FSH being a condition of warranty, it'd be a deal breaker for me .....
 
It is yes. 100% LR Approved, will come with a 2 year unlimited warranty.

Maybe it was serviced when it should have been but not updated on system until recently. I'd want to see original paperwork. I'd walk away unless it could be proved 100% else your warranty wouldn't be worth jack
 
Yep, bit more ha. His exacts words were (before i told him i had the paperwork in front of me) was that they had no record of a service done in 2017, so they have basically just run 2 services on the same day to ensure they get the extended warranty. Which stacks up to the online print out i got with VIN. So the warranty i have no doubt i will get, i just don't want to be in getting warranty work done more than you usually would with any other LR...

My heads saying forget it, but my heart is quite set on this one.

Weirdly though i have since checked another 2 VINs of other Discos i had looked at and one hadn't been serviced once since new in Jan 15...

Basically i'm wondering is the engine way more worn out now, than had it have been serviced at 16k miles or 12 months? And will cause me problems further down the line?
 
It appears, from what you have said that this D4 had been on the original oil until it was recently serviced... Given the occasional fragility with the engine, I'd be worried .... BUT ... if the price reduction is enough to cover most of the cost of a recon engine .. or pay for further warranty when the included runs out, then ....

I'd also want it, explicitly, in writing that your warranty would NOT be affected in any way shape or form, AND, that if it is, then the seller dealer agrees to pick up the full bill..

It seems rather peculiar to me that LR would accept two services done on the same day as "OK" within its warranty terms .... and playing devils advocate, I might tell them the problem and see what they say... ;)

( Can you tell I was burnt once by a similar situation - cost me £8K in 2004 ... and I'll not go there again )

And then you buy one from a main dealer because you dont want a crashed damage car then find out its been rear ended and heavy front end damage repaired and LR say hard luck like they did to a mate of mine.
 
If it has had 38k without a service i'd expect that motor to be fecked,

My P38's service history shows its first service at 1180mi this i believe is the Break in service..
And every 10k after which is pushing it IMO!!..

That thing with its severe lack of SH would worry me tbh..

But as they say..

The dealers said Its possible that servicing was carried out at another dealers when it was in for warranty work.
Ill go and have a look at the documents. See what the crack is. It is a commercial so possibly been serviced independently?
 
Look at it this way; you are only considering spending such a substantial sum on a car with a dodgy service history because it comes direct from LR with their warranty. Whoever buys it off you down the line will not have that assurance....how much would they be willing to pay?
It may be relatively cheap now, but I could well cost you money in the long term even if nothing goes wrong with it.
 
It appears the the record of this vehicles servicing is based on an on-line record, what’s where’s to the vehicles service handbook which in my experience is always signed, dated and stamped by the dealers service dept. What’s happened to that?
Also is the vehicle proposed purchase from the supplying dealership, whom will have a record of the work carried out, and in the event of service handbook being lost will produce a copy of the original, although it will say ‘copy’ and give service type and it’s date, the signatures and dealer date stamp will be up to date and not original.
 
JLR certainly no longer issue service log books (wife has a Jag XE). It's now all done on a JLR database, no paperwork that could be stamped by a non JLR garage. So, post warranty if you take it to an independent or nonJLR dealership, best you invest in your own logbook.
