To cut a long story short I want a 2.8l petrol in My Landy :D. From what I understand a 19j block would only need the head off a petrol (have one lying around) and a distributor in place of the vacuum pump. So the question is can these be bored out to 95mm like the 300tdi or even 100mm to give 3l? If anyone has an block they can take measurements off that would be great as I don't know the wall thickness or cooling channel locations. (Can't go V8 for insurance reasons etc).

You would also need to block off the oil feed for the turbocharger on the 19j block.

Why not just go with a 2.5 petrol? 300cc will make little difference to performance, and you will have to tell your insurer you have a modified vehicle, which they won't like either.

I would go for a 2.5l but they are almost impossible to find compared to a 2.5 TD or NA.
I can also get good quotes with a modifed 2.5L but not with a 3.5L v8 (£2000 compared to £700) so the money I save on insurance will cover building a higher performance 2.8L. Plus I fancy a bit of a project
 
I really wouldn't try boring out a 19j block. They were known for suffering from suffering from cracked blocks as it is. If you want more power and torque you could try a 2.8 iveco engine or the 2.5 mazda wl-t engine. Both of which produce about 120hp-125hp and about 230 ft/lb of torque

I'll have a look at them but ideally I wanted to keep it landrover based but petrol

2.8 and 3 litre Ford V6 were a well rated conversion in Land Rovers years ago.
Not sure if it would be easy to find one of those these days either, though.
 
You could try the 2.6 6 cylinder as fitted to the IIb and one-ton. Not much more power than the 2.5 but much more torque.

Yeah i'm considering an essex but it'll need an adapter plate etc which gets expensive. Loads of power though lol
 
As Turboman Said I have kep an eye out for them for about 6 months now with no luck other than incomplete or way to expensive

Six pot in a 2a Station Wagon is quite a sought after vehicle now, so any spare engines will have been snapped up for parts.
They are a nice smooth drive, but not much more power then a 4 cylinder, and less than a 2.5 petrol or NA.
So I certainly wouldn't bother retrofitting one.

Kind if wish I hadn't sold my six cylinder for a grand years ago now, though.

Yeah I've heard that they are a wonderful engine but seem outdated being sidevalve etc and someone got a good deal for £1000 as the cheapest I saw was a incomplete engine for £600!!! and a non runner for £800

The grand was for the whole vehicle, but that was 25 years ago, all Series were dirt cheap then.

From memory, they are inlet over exhaust, so only the exhaust valves are side valve.
 
Not sure how easy to fit but maybe easier to find a 3.0 litre six from a P5. If you can find one of the last ones with the Weslake mods from the manual version you would be looking at 134bhp and 169lb/ft at 1750 rpm. I had one in a P5 Coupe silky smooth and almost same power as the v8. Not sure if he still has any but David Green always had lots of P5s some of which he breaks up,

If you want a real project why not a 2.8 BMW like the South African ones
