replacing the boost diaphragm on my 19j td injection pump, when putting it back to together the instructions I was following mentions a shim washer, that appears to sit in the dish of the diaphragm where the pin protrudes. I have lost this shim washer or possibly it was lost by the previous owner of the vehicle, as it looks like this job has been done in the past. I have put everything back together and the van seems to run ok, does this shim just give the spring a little more tension? after all that waffle the question is does anyone have a part number for the aforementioned shim washer.

I would suggest fitting it asap. I would guess it is there to stop the spring going through the rubber of the diaphragm. So it may run fine for a time, then go again.
No idea about the part number, google may be helpful. I tend to get pump bits from a local fuel injection specialist.

Have you tried ringing John Craddock? They are usually pretty helpful with hard to get parts?

No, my bad, it would seem that the new ones don't have it in there, I cant see the spring going through the rubber though, I don't think it would be the end of the world running it without the washer, would it? I don't think mine has ever had a shim washer in it.

I think that is an uprated set up, the older ones didnt have the metal insert, IIRC. Looks better than I remember them! :)
 
Don't know if it's supposed to have shim washer or not. Just instructions I'm following show a picture of the diaphragm that is in your link, and the shim sitting in front of it. Just concerned about would I be doing any damage with it not being there, yes I agree the shape of the diaphragm and where the spring sits suggests it would not be able to move and damage the rubber. But not having done this job before I don't really know.
 
The washer sits in the dish around the pin in the above photo, I don't see why you would need one, if it is a shim that would tell me they may come in different sizes but why you would need to shim a spring is beyond me.
 
Yes that's the one I followed. Don't know if I lost the shim or if it was ever ther to start with. Checked workshop floor, and anywhere on the truck where it may have landed.
 
Im wondering if its there so as to seat against the pump? You know when the diaphragm is pushed over? Or to shim the pin to make it smaller?

Is your vehicle boosting Ok? any over fuelling? Smoke?
 
Power is dramatically improved and smoking initially appeared to have stopped but I let it tick over for about 20 minutes and it started to smoke again, then took it for a run out and it seemed to clear up, bearing in mind the old diaphragm was non existent and it was smoking like a train (steam train not electric lol)
 
I was actually considering dropping a 200tdi or 300tdi in there but.had second thoughts, generally the engine seems to be in quite good condition for its age and only 88k on the clock, not many original 90s left so going to try and keep it standard as possible.
