My brother-in-law is having trouble with starting his Defender 90. Clicking noise only so sounds like the starter solenoid is worn out. I have seen a starter repair kit for the TD5 defender engine - Nippon Denso starter.

Can anyone confirm for me:

Is the 1997 2.5 Tdi Defender a 300 Tdi unit?
Is there a solenoid repair kit available?

Thanks

Agree - sounds like battery, maybe from dodgy alternator - can/have you checked alternator output (think it is 14.5 volts or summit)

battery loosing charge? have you checked to see if your alternator is actually charging the battery.
Same thing happened on my old V8, was the alt, nothing wrong with the starter.

have you tried tapping the starter motor when turning it over? sometimes sorts it out if its been standing/cold.

Asking somebody who can't get their engine to start to check the output of their alt. Seems slightly strange to me or am I missing something??

clinking being plural kinda indicates it's not a click, or as you say a clunk - but isnt a clunk a loud click ?

clicking being plural could mean that everytime he does it it clicks once. Therefore if he's done it more than once it would be clicking when he tries it. A clunk isn't a click. Not in my books anyway.

On the side of the road I can listen to the persons descriptioon of the fault and then listen to the actual fault to see if the description matches. On a forum I can't. Hence the questions I asked. It makes it more specific and therefore easier (hopefully) to diagnose without actually seeing the vehicle.

It's amazing how many people can't tell the difference between a click, clunk, twang ets etc.;)

It could possibly be a 'clank'.

The English Oxford Dictionary states...

'clunk' - a simultaneous click and a clank

Look it up if you dont believe me:)
