Hi all,
just looking for some information on possible causes of the extremely high fuel consumption on my Range rover DSE.
i work it out that its doing 18 mpg, thats at average 60mph and there is no evidence of any leaks underneath or under the bonnet of the vehicle.
The running of the car isn't extremely bad, although the engine is very flat until the turbo starts boosting,(can anyone else hear the air being forced around when boosting) and is easy to stall when cold, it doesn't smoke lots of black smoke.

Also does anyone know where the trip computer gets its information from as the average mpg it is showing is never above 21mpg and normally resides around the 15.6-17 mpg mark.
Could this just be a common sensor problem that needs changng without any diagnostic computer?

Could be a number of things. Poor fuel consumption on a diesel is usually down to faulty injectors, which are common as diesels get older. You could try some injector cleaner, but to be honest I've never noticed any significant difference after using them. The last one I tried was a trade-only product which is supposed to be better than Redex etc, and I haven't noticed any difference!

Probably worth getting it down to a LR specialist for them to have a look (not a main dealer!) otherwise you could be guessing and replacing parts at random and wasting money.

It could be an air leak on the Turbo hosing if you can hear it clearly on boost!

As mmaddock says, its best to get an LR specialist to have a look as you could spend hours mucking about and getting nowhere!
 
You should definetly not be able to hear any whistling when the turbo comes in. As Matt has said, it could be your injectors. No. 4 injector is critical as it is a sensor injector, I have recently changed it on mine and I noticed an increase on mpg. This injector is the most expensive at around £90, the others are all standard. Just check your wires going to no.4 injector to make sure they haven't rubbed on anything. Also on the fuel filter housing there's a little square box with a wire connecting to it and a rubber hose going to the air intake manifold, the rubber hose sometimes rubs on the other pipework near the injector pump, this could be causing you to hear the noise when the boost comes in, it would also give you poor economy as it is one of the sensors for the ECU and injection system.
Failing that, you'll have to get your money out and get it tested on the test book!
 
Did you do the injector yourself, or get a garage to do it? How much of a job is it? I'm not getting great MPG (although nowhere near as bad as the OP!) Am thinking at 202k, it is probably time for a new set of injectors!

What sort of MPG increase did you see?

Did the job myself, however, you need a special socket with slots in the sides for the wires on No.4 injector. Luckily for me my friend owns a diesel injection company, so he got me the injector and lent me the socket to do the job. If you've got a 24mm deep socket and can cut the side out of it, you can get away with it.
Mpg increased from 20mpg to 24mpg on local runs, not done a long run for some time to see what it's like on that. We're at 151k at the mo. Long way to go to catch yours up!

Actually before you start cutting your socket set up, it might have been a 27mm long reach socket! Just double check!
