Owned this defender since late September. Bought from a farmers market and bought by me for £800. Tdi motor and gearbox run really sweet, for a landy. Always been maintained mechanically. However aesthetics were no priority. It had no welding done to it and was rarely washed after working in the fields. Hasn't been on the road for almost a decade. My landys are always working vehicles and are not shiny show cars. My premise is functionality with reliability. Hence why I roller paint my land rovers. Hopefully pictures will work

Not a thing wrong with roller painting. I tackle both spraying and roller painting on vehicles and boats.

The prep and clean up for spraying bores the absolute life out of me as I work in small garage so lots has to be moved and covered every time I go to spray. Seen quite a few roller painted Land Rovers and they have looked spot on.

I'll be roller painting mine this year as space is mega tight at the moment.
 
Agreed a cheap way and a pretty good finish. Did my series 2 as a roller paint and the now defender. Sheep rub up against mine and narrow roads means a lot of time against hedges. Plus suits a landy I think. Anyway I will try an work out how to do pictures properly. My iPhone doesn't like Doing it
 
Yeah roller finish can look perfect. Same as everything...depends whose doing it. Know of Defender locally hand painted...just slapped on, over fittings, rubbers etc..household gloss!!! Looks horrible creamy white.

But painted a boat last summer. Weather was good, didn't want to spray outside and couldn't face prepping garage for spraying again so roller painted it. Rubbed between coats, finished with 1500 w&d then roll on laquer. Awesome finish. And no messy clean up.
 
Also picked up an ifor Williams canopy in really good nick for £30
Also sorted out brakes and suspension. Plus cleaning the rear tub for a paint

 
Work had to continue with the chassis focussing on the drivers side as that'd where the wiring runs for the rear lighting and couldn't connect the lights up at the back incase the wires went up in flames from welding. So the drivers side outrigger had to be done.


Now I've done this same job on my series 2 and it took me a day. But defender outriggers are a job from hell in comparison. Having to cut the floor out, remove the radius arm and all host of other things. However seeing the finished job made it seem worthwhile.

The fuel tank had to come out as it needed some welding behind that and also found that had rusted and developed a leak so need a new tank. Also a new tubular outrigger was needed so got one of them too



Then came across life growing in dash vents
 
I need to bring this up to date. So in a nutshell. A coat of paint was rollered on.



Little electrical bits are being sorted out. All rear lights work and all front lights work. Damn even the courtesy light works when you open the door. The interior is a little better then before but a long way to go yet

Cheers mate. Not meant to be a show build. Don't know what fun I'll have when it comes to taxing it. It's currently on limited use so the PO could have it run red diesel and no MOT and tax hence its poor state when I got it. Then when this is running and ready my series 2 can have its tdi conversion done. Don't want two landiies off the road at once. It's the wiring that's taking forever. The farmer owned since the late 90's/early 2000's and it's been kept mechanically sound but everytging else. Not so good. No difflock light wires, no fuel tank sender wires plus lots more. But on the plus side I think I've found all the faults with it as a vehicle. Just about getting through each one.

It's a shame because the front of the chassis still has the factory paint on it. But the bulkhead outriggers backwards is just rust. The work done on the chassis should last a minimum of 5 years completely trouble free. But with an occasional was and a coating of oil it should last a lot longer. Amazingly the engine doesn't smoke and doesn't leak any oil, had a brand new power steering box. No oil stains anywhere on my garage floor and it's been in there for a few months now.

So many bits I would like to buy but have to stop myself and buy what is needed and not just what I want. I've got so many Land Rover bits now that I need to sell I reckon I could open a shop. Got a brand new rebuilt rear tub under some tarpaulin in the field. But hopefully the 90 will be ready to drive out the barn in about a month. If I keep up the pace.
 
More chassis painting and sorting out brakes and suspension. Looks better than the rusty mess it was. Debating on painting the spring.

Cheers :) found it on the side of the round a while back completely empty. And it was the perfect height to lift the chassis. No longer under there anymore as the back end is done now.
 
Haven't done anything with this for a while. So as this weekend was the first weekend I've had free for a while. So did some bits on the landy. So most important job is to do the passenger side bulkhead outrigger. After the ordeal I had tryin to cut the drivers side off I borrowed a plasma cutter and cut it off it about 30 minutes. No welder atm so I'll be welding it on next week.



As on the other side behind the outrigger are more holes



Lots of welding to do as well, tricky area being in the trailing arm mount of the chassis.

Also painted the battery box in hammerite black so looks a lot better.



Also finished fitting my halogen headlights so should be able to see in the dark when it's finally on the road. Need to source a new fuel tank as mine has a hole at the very bottom. Don't want to just patch it as I want a fairly reliable landy when it's finished
