Hi Guys
I have a 1989 110 2.5 n/a I would like to convert to power steering .
my intention is to swap the engine so the pump and reservoir would be taken care of .
The manual box is a 4 bolt can i replace it with any 4 bolt power box ie defender 300dti/ td5 , discovery 1/2 ?
will my existing drop arm and steering shaft joint fit or do more components require changing?

Thanks

From memory, which is distant, fortunately, there are few similarities with the system you have.
You will need another box, which I think has to come from a Ninety/One Ten, or an older Defender or Disco.
Power steering box doesn't have a drop arm, it has an arm that moves side to side, and the ball joint set up is completely different.
Power steering should also have a damper, which needs a different steering linkage to fit.

Funny, I thought by 89 all trucks were power steering as standard. Would also have been TD at that time. May well have been late reg of early model.

I've just done this on our '86 Ninety (tul, ffw), seen a few differences..

I used a D1 200tdi type steeringbox.
the Landrover 'keep-fit' box has imperial nut & bolt fastening to the chassis whereas the D1's pas box has METRIC bolts through the chassis into the 'box.

my struggle (mein kampf:confused:)
there will be more but I'm tired after work...

also believe the earlier RangeRovers of similar age to your Landy?

Rich.

I used a 300tdi Discovery steering box on mine when I fitted a 300tdi engine.
You need to fit a Defender drop arm with ball joint, I don't think that the one off the manual box will do.
There is nothing else that requires changing, although some pipes may need lengthening.
I think that I will have used the fixing bolts that came with the PAS box as I had the whole Discovery to go at.
