Hi,
I have a 1988 3.5 EFI. It has developed the most infuriating fault. Every 20 or 30 miles maybe more, maybe less it stops, like someone has turned of the ignition. Instant reaction is aim for the hard shoulder, turn on the hazards, slow down and wait. Usually before it has come to a halt it picks up and runs perfectly normally until the next time.
So far Ive changed ignition module, petrol filter, disconnected the emissions control gubbins from the tank and replaced with a breather pipe and checked and cleaned the connectors to the ECU and flap valve - so far to no effect. Ive also checked the fuel rail is approx. 40psi (I havent tested this while its broken cos it doesnt remain broken long enough, next plan is to plumb a pressure gauge into it permanently so I can see what is going on when it stops). I also put a plug on a lead to see if I had a spark and there was but it then started so Im still not sure if that was co-incidence or not.
Anyone out there who might have any further ideas of what might be the next thing to try? Its driving me round the bend.
