Hi All,
Recently picked up my first LR, a 110 Ex-MOD with the 2.5na 12j upfront, one of the extended life programme vehicles with the blue painted engine rebuilt in 2008.
It's showing very low mileage so fair to say it's been sitting around for years and years. Drove it back from S. Wales 120 miles and though a bit lumpy at start up (with white smoke) ran great all the way back. Smoke disappears when warm, though changing down gears creates a puff of white smoke. Overfuelling I think?

Started it this week and noticed when driving power drop at the upper end of the rev range in each gear. Thought fuel starvation so changed fuel filter and cleaned out sedimenter. Test drive ran very well but started to rev a bit high on idle and then all of a sudden max revs with no throttle input. Managed to get off the road, throttle mechanism seemed to work as before. So gave it a few mins and turned the key - straight back to full revs no input.

Any thought's from experienced folks? Something stuck open in the IP maybe? New throttle cable I think there's some crap in the injector nozzles that i'm going to try to Redex clear.

Be great to hear opinions - I actually like the 2.5na before 200/300 swap that's a last resort on such a low mileage engine
Thanks!

Hello mate. Sounds like an ok motor you have there. I’m one for keeping them as they are, I like originality. I think your engine would be fine. It’s not a racing machine by any means but it was made to do a job and I think it does fine in that motor. Used them in the military a long time ago and have to say they did everything it had to do. Bit slow on a motorway mind but you can’t have it all. Maybe the engine just needs a good service and gone through to get it running well. Check your lift pump if it’s dropping off, worth a try. Go over all the absolute basics, you mentioned things like the cable, valid, just make sure it’s free and the pump linkage is ok too. I think you have a decent machine there and a good dose of fettling could keep her happy. Worth a try before an engine swap. The engine is fairly simple so you should try to keep it that way if you get on ok with it. I had a 19j which is pretty much the same engine with the turbo. It was a bit like your one. Liked to be warmed up to get the best from it, just think how lucky you are to be able to work on such a simple machine. It’ll be good crack sorting it out and very satisfying to get it sweet as pie. Good luck and enjoy. Keep some updates if you can 🤙

Hi Mate, appreciate you taking the time to reply - yeah all for originality.
Oh motorways are bloody awful, she doesn’t sound happy above 55mph and I've had some hand signals from HGV drivers while they overtake me - they’re probably just saying how nice the 110 looks!

Thanks for the lift pump tip - it seemed to pull fuel into the new filter quite quickly but just thinking if it was knackered could it lead to over fuelling?

Its the high revs I can’t quite figure out.
I’ve cleaned the life out of all external moving parts on the IP and backed off the lower stop screw. Going to adjust idle on the actual idle adjustment arm and hope the governor settles down.

They’re simple engines - I’m just unfamiliar with them still.

Thanks anyway for the advice mate

Hello mate. That photo of the Land Rover looks really good. Stuck with original if you can.Less is more. Always thought 45 mph was my old ones optimal speed for a long run, you get there..in the end. Do your best to get to know how it works and work through the engine a bit at a time to try and suss where your problem is coming from. If you do struggle a bit then try and find a mechanic who has experience of this era of machine, there is a lad near me who is time served and ex army on these engines from that time. Thats the kinda lad you need to find. Had a thought that the fuel pump might need an overhaul too. See how you go. 👍
