My 1977 Series 3 2.25 Petrol which I recently rewired (everything except the alternator wire as I did not have a new connector to the alternator) Ran after the rewire for 40 mins, I then turned it off it started fine three more times. On the third time the engine started dying then stopped and will not restart. The starter motor still turns over the engine but engine does not start. Any suggestions on what the problem maybe? I thought it was a fuel issue so cleaned carb and pretty sure saw fuel going into the engine when turning over.

Check your points, the gap might have closed if you've not tightened the screw enough after initial set up. Check the rotor arm is seating correctly. Check for a spark at the plug, check for a spark at the king lead on the dizzy, try pouring a small amount of fuel down the throat of the carb to see if it runs for a few seconds. (if it runs it could be a sticking float in your carb) After you've done all that you should have found the problem
 
Have a look in the top of the carb, when you work the throttle mechanism, does the accelerator jet squirt fuel in or not? If not, you have a fuel starvation issue.Take the fuel pipe off at the carb and crank the engine, fuel should squirt out. If not, it might be the fuel pump or the fuel filter gauze on the pick-up pipe in the fuel tank. What happens is that debris in the tank gathers around the gauze over time and blocks it. When the engine stops, sometimes the debris falls away because the suction is gone and the engine will start again - until the debris blocks it again. Sometimes the stuff doesn't fall away though. Check the gauze on the pick-up pipe first and if that is clear, check that the fuel pump is working. Also blow the fuel pipes through to rule out a blockage.
 
My series 3 gave me loads of problems when I first got it. One of them was a dodgy ignition switch. Sometimes it would make and other times it wouldn't. The lack of a red ignition light was my clue to the problem. Your issue, whilst frustrating is probably a simple one. Just be methodical and trace every electrical connection from the battery through the the fuses, ignition switch, coil dizzy etc. Good luck, report back when you find it.

I once had a very puzzling cutting out problem because mykey fob was too heavy and was pulling the key round over bumps, Should have relaised too as I'd had the same problem on a BSA with the key on the side, the key ring would act like a sail and cause a misfire.

Try a temporary 12v supply direct from battery to input side of coil to see if that eliminates the problem, especially as you have been working on the wiring.

sounds like coil failed, its common for them to not completely die in one go

Started the car again the other day no problem after running for another 10 mins or so it died and then would not start again.
When running it was extremely rough and very black sooty exhaust gases.
While it ran I used spark plugs lights to check all the spark plugs getting power which they were in correct order.
Took out the fuel pick up pipe and check it, it was clear and emptied out fuel filter bowl which had a small amount of dirt in it but not much.
Could the problem be running to rich due to poorly adjusted carb?
When re wired it had a new coil.
 
Check the plugs, I think you will find them to be black and sooty. Instead of a fuel starvation issue, you seem to have an over-fuelling issue. Strip the carb, clean all the jets and passageways and check that the float valve is cutting the fuel flow as it should. Check also the float level.
