ive recently bought a series 3 88' diesel from a farm which has been sat outside and not moved for nearly 3 years

after changing the glow plugs we finally got it started and its got a very very nasty amazing loud noise which is sounding like a pop or a phwarp

the engine has got a home made snorkel on it which we originally thought it was that making the noise so we disconnected that from the air cleaner unit and a load of browny gunge/slop came oozing out

we then tried to run it with it the snorkel dissconected and the noise remains the same

any suggestions what could be causing this amazingly loud noise ? ?

gunge/slop came oozing out

Could be swine flu or mud and crap, from when it went off roading, it broke down then he left it in a field for 3 years, and then you came along.......

If the air cleaner is off, missing, whatever, the INLET noise can be very loud indeed.

This is because it's a diesel, and there's no carburettor butterfly valve or anything to keep the valve and air-suction noises down.

Best not run it without some sort of filter in the inlet.

we only took off the air inlet for try and eliminate what was making the noise , its all back together now and still making the horrible ear drum shatering sound (pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop)

i've asked about a bit and a few people have said it may be only firing on 3 cylinders due to one being seized or not firing because of blocked injectors , is there any easy way i can check this myself because i cant afford to get a mechanic out

Tricky to diagnose from Pop pop pop ........

First examine the EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET very carefully. If it is blasted, replace it and that should be that.

Second take off the rocker cover and make sure all the rockers are in one piece (8 of them) and the pushrods are in place, and the VALVE CLEARANCES are set correctly.

It's not possible for us to say if your POP POP POP .... is mechanical banging or some less awful thing like a blown manifold gasket.

Why not ask if there's a LZ expert near you who could have a listen?

Meaning valve not sealing properly.

Unless and until he checks the clearances we can't take this further.

no charles y i mean the edge of the valve has been burnt away, this causes the valve to partially seal but lets some of the combustion out before its ready causing the pop,i have seen this many times in my mechanicing years.

if there was a load of gunge in the snorkle how much crap as gone in the engine. also i have see a lot of valve collets come out of situ and the valve is just floating in the valve guide this also causes the popping noise,

dont think any crap went into the engine we disconnected the snorkel , and the engine side of the inlet pipe was clean so luckily it looks like its just pooled at the end near the filter

i would do what chalesy said and remove the rocker cover first that should give a better picture as to whats happening

YES!
I meant what I said.
It is more or less impossible to say if a valve is BURNED or CRACKED at the edge or NOT SEATED due to no clearance.

The symptoms are much the same.

By checking all 8 valve clearances are OK, he can eliminate that possible fault, and if it's still popping like that he's one step nearer knowing of what's probably wrong.

Systematic diagnosis. It is well worth doing, and can save heaps of time and cash later.

it occurs to me you might be very lucky and be suffering from a sticking valve.

If that is the cae be VERY careful when setting clearances else you may adjust it while the valve is actuallly stuck a bit open / off its seat.

There are ways to loosen and free off stuck valves.
