well guys, believe me, I have tried the search box for this, so unless someone can point me into the right box,
I need some help/encouragement/magic wand !!

much loved daily driver for the last 3 years.
197000 miler, starts so easily hot or cold,
dont use hardly any engine oil, nor water.
it had a bit of a "knock" when i got it,
never got worse, so left it.
I done the cam belt earlier this year,
and it had bent both pushrods on No.1 cylender.
over the last few weeks I had to do lots of motorway type miles,
(at 60 -70 mph) and it ran very well as usuall.
then last week, I noticed some rattling coming from the No. 1 cylender area.
but dont do it when cold/start up..
dont do it on load/accelerating, only on part throttle & engine overun.
was never a "quiet" engine, but ran/runs well still.
but I is getting worried.
when I used the old piece of hosepipe to ear to noise trick, its deffo coming from front of engine,
central to left handside from front,
maybe camfollower, maybe piston/little end bearing, maybe I`m stuck fer answers here..

I can do all me own repairs, and have done so for more years then I`m admitting too.
have done so much to my 200 disco in the 3 years, I dont want to blow it up......

as I`m old (64 &3/4`s)
not a hobbit,
but just a concerned landy lover..

all donations of wisdom will be recieved in gratitude.

get a leak down test carried out. Could be ex hydrolocked - bent conrod - split piston - yu name it.

tar ever so MHM

thing is, it still runs so well,
no excess ring blow by/smoke or pressure from oil filler cap,
not uneven running,
but thoughts of compression cracked piston was one of mine also...

I know someone that bought a V8 beemer with a slight knock - ran it for 80K miles - it always knocked - but seemed to run OK. Took the heads off to decoke it or summat and wondered why one piston wouldnt go down.............

It had sheared around a ring slot and the piston crown was just loose - was tapping when in use . New piston - quiet as a mouse :).

LOL

It had sheared around a ring slot and the piston crown was just loose - was tapping when in use . New piston - quiet as a mouse .

you made I larf.. :)

over the years I`ve blown a few racing motors up,
long time ago now,
but when I was told to stop, I ended up on nice mundane 2T scooters..

:flame:
melted a few pistons on them,
when there tuned to feck also.
no valves on em so very HiTemp exhaust goes out through the exhaust port on piston timing, causing that side of piston to melt, seize the rings, maybe the whole lot all too quickly,
tends to keep your clutch lever fingers close,
as siezed injin causes the nice 10inch back wheel to stop quickly,

if you take the **** on rpm for too long,
and dont try to run em on cheap 2T lube.

really, am I too old to be still like all this....

nah, feck it,
not dead

yet ...

sorry, but got another story of part pistons..

long time ago, a matey of mine was using the 1800 mgb lump in his stock car,
always looking for more power, he built a "special" 1800.
used toyota twin cam pistons
(same sized as lotus but cheaper)
but used the old 1800 BMC diesel engine crank,
with mains ground down to suit 1800 petrol engine block,
but big end journals ground offset to match petrol motor but gave bigger stroke.

was then called into an RAC overseen engine check,
so matey cut down two piston tops then dropped into opened engine onto 2 pistons partway up bore, had two other pistons not at neither TDC nor BDC.
had bores dia checked, verses top of 2 false pistions @ false TDC verses 2 only partway down bores :)
= gave tottal cc`s as within regs..........lol.....

was over 2 1/2 litres in reallity....
but unrealiable as piston liners
kept slipping = not enough room fer top lip to hold em..
(i would have done it better - but!)

things we done fer more oomph back in the days eh...

You had the valves checked and adjusted?
;)
yup tocca, I done that a few days ago, checking N0. 1 more than once to be sure..
I even now got the adjusting sequence written on me cardboard half rad cover at the top so I got it right.
1 down adjust 9...errrr I mean 8 lol....

Next time you hear it knocking , open bonnet and put a long screwdriver onto each injector and then put the handle of the screwdriver against your ear !!! You should be able to track down the noise and pinpoint the general area and hopefully as you move nearer to the cause you will hear it plain as day !!!!

thanks feretboy.
since i posted about me knock, i`ve done a quite few miles up & down a motorway type road @ 55mph,
it just runs so well still..
I did give it a cans of wynns oil reinforcer (no knocks to you & me)
yes it still makes some noise, but runs ok.

I tried the length of clean hosepipe to me good ear previously, but when I get a minuet tomoz I`ll try your long screwdriver tip.
