The rebuild of my 130 is now slowly getting under way, but I have just stripped the half shafts out off the rear Salisbury axle and on the half shafts there is a flat machined on the area where the oil seal sits, both are machined in the same place and it looks like they have been properly milled, also on one shaft there is a blob of solder on the outer end of the spline.
Having never stripped one of these down before is this normal ? if it is then I can't see the point of the seal, but if it isn't I cant see why they would have been done like it.
Can anyone throw any light on it for me please ?

300 tdi half shafts use seal in stub axle to prevent oil reaching wheel bearings in hub, solder isnt part of std set up
