Advice on another little problem vehicle is a 110 fitted with a 300tdi and R380 gearbox it whines a bit like a tram, just had a recon transfer box fitted as per diagnosis but it’s still there advice now is it’s the rear axle and as it’s a Salisbury with drum brakes it’s not an easy sort.
I want to be sure now that this is the fault before going to the exspense of finding and installing a used axle, any ideas on how to determine this is the fault as it’s hard to tell where it’s coming from, the axle has done around 190000 miles never been short of oil and has a relatively easy life.

need a little more information about how and when the sound occurs. Does it happen only when underload, or on overrun, does it happen when moving but in neutral, or with clutch pressed etc. Why do they think it is the axles not the main gearbox if they first thought it was the transfer box.
Just as a comparison, my 110 is on its 4th recon gearbox, 4th recon transfer box, but is still on the original untouched (diff) Salisbury rear axle at 420k miles.

Wow that’s why I want to be sure this time!! You can hear it when accelerating in second gear also when and you take your foot off the pedal and the car is slowing in the 2nd and 3rd, coasting in neutral the noise is still there, I haven’t tried depress the clutch pedal but will try that later. The garage did say they were surprised the axles are really heavy duty. When cruising along at 50 or 60 it’s not excessive. The engine and gearbox were new factory unit when I had them put in done about 90,000 now. I did wonder if it was the gearbox but not sure how to determine this, thanks for your help in my younger days I would have enjoyed sorting all this stuff but getting up off the ground now is a major event these days

Known issue with R380 box is issues with 5th gear bearing, a change of oil may help in the short term.
