Looking to buy my first Landy. Definitely want a 110 double cab pick up. I would appreciate some advice on this vehicle and the sort of things I should ask when I view it. Thanks.

First time Land Rover purchasers have a reputation of being clueless rubes and some sellers try to take advantage of them. So, make sure it has 4 doors.

From the bottom of my heart, take someone who knows Land Rovers.

+1.

Have you driven one before? They’re not everyone’s cup of tea.

Rust is the biggest issue, in the chassis and bulkhead. Check that all identification numbers are present and match as these things get nicked like nobody’s business. Don’t let your heart rule your head too. Buy on condition and not necessarily age or mileage.

If/when you get one, let us know. And don’t forget to say hi in the intro section as if you do get one, you’ll likely have lots more questions.

Pretty sure traders have to display the reg.
Make sure it's not stolen and when you buy it make sure it doesn't get stolen.

Its clean and polished to sell. Double cabs are about to get hit hard as benefit in kind for company cars (I read somewhere), so there will be plenty to choose from in the near future. That one looks grossly overpriced in my opinion, by about ten grand.

The trader has made a mistake by covering the underneath in some black stuff of some sort. This is to fool the gullible. He would have been better off just giving it a proper clean and leaving it honest, then offer a proper rust protection as part of the sale.

Yes. Although a Land Rover is a very SIMPLE vehicle and about one of the easiest vehicles to inspect.

If you can’t inspect it yourself, then frankly more fool you for not putting in any effort to learn anything about vehicles and mechanics.

The fact that every single item on a Defender is repairable or replaceable means you don’t need to buy a mint one.

You may wish to re-Google this. I think you’ll find your facts are out of date.

Check the MoT history on- https://car-check.co.uk/
and watchout for (beware of) advisories like these, example is from a single pickup...
  • chassis both sides covered in underseal and showing signs of corrosion
  • front bulkhead covered in underseal but showing signs of corrosion
  • vehicle completely covered in underseal inside and out and from top to bottom

Or like this... (again, it's just 1 landie pickup, on 1 mot)

Reason(s) for failure

  • Offside Front position lamp(s) not working (1.1.A.3b)
  • Nearside Rear Direction indicator not working (1.4.A.2c)
  • Nearside Front Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Nearside Rear Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Nearside Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Front Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Rear Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Offside Rear Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
  • Rear Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)
Unless of course, you're looking for a cheap wreck (these were both asking over ÂŁ5k) to work on for a couple of years...

I dont agree.... With a Defender its knowing the weak spots which they all have. Even a good mechanic can easily miss those, miss filler.

I paid for a LR garage to check mine over and they didn't pick up on the face the front outriggers were not attached to the bulkhead, nor could they be as they had been welded on mis aligned.

Apart from advisories on steering box oil leak, seat belt damage and brake pedal rubber worn a couple of years ago, mot has been passed. Mileage looks about right on mot check as well. Mot expires November.
