So I was bored n after a long drive yesterday thought Id see just how bad my fuel economy was.

I drove from Taunton to Warminster to Guildford & back, all in all about 288 miles. Cost me £40 in petrol, now according to this site Fuel Calculators » Fuel-Economy.co.uk

288 miles using £40 of petrol at 133.9p p/litre gives me a fuel economy of 42.61 MPG...

Is that right? I thought the official landrover stats were something like 25MPG for motorway driving? Am I doing me maffs right coz I aint very good at maffs and cant figure it out meself! To me it seems like a hell of a lot of petrol for not that many miles really, and Im well tight with money n fuelling me landy :D

If your £40 usage is accurate I make the mpg 43.83!! I can't see that is correct?
You can't go off the gauge, the only way is to brim the tank before and after the journey, measuring how much is used to refill it the second time.

Unfortunately I cant afford to brim it once, let alone twice! :p So for now, the highly innacurate fuel guage reading will have to do! :D Im happy imagining my super fuel efficient hippo is getting 40+ MPG :D

Maybe he is running 2WD :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

That's twice the 20mpg I get out of my V6!!

If you can't afford to brim it you would have to run out of fuel, then put a known quantity in and then drive til you run out again. ....

But I don't recommend this as you run the risk of pulling all sorts of crap from the bottom of the tank.

He might want to mod with low fuel light by G13SJC

You needn't worry about fuel dregs, as the FL fuel pump pre-filter intake is right on the base of the tank anyway ;)

im getting about 270 miles to 51 litres works out at about 24 mpg...has yours spent half its life travelling on back of an AA van to get the mpg?

Is your Serengeti re-mapped?

As far as Im aware, no it hasnt been. Though it is something Ive considered getting done.

That is a handy looking mod actually, the fuel gauge is horrifically innacurate, depending on what angle Im at it can make about 1/4 a tank of difference! I normally just go by my trip counter rather than fuel gauge, I know £10 will get me about 70 miles before I need to worry. Unless Im doing delivery driving in which case £10 will get me about 15 miles

:D Nope, just been very well looked after its whole life, and only got 60k on the clock, practically brand new still!

Sounds like I need to get me a 1.8 petrol and sell the TD4 auto then..... But there again I can't live with a manual, so I'll just have to get a v6.

Hang on, this is about saving money, not spending it.

Okay, I'll keep the TD4 auto then...

:D

IIRC Serengeti came out in 2002? anyway it will have the coil pack (non dizzy cap) and MEMS 3 ECU, which can be remapped for optimum fuel injection timing, mainly for performance, but equally for economy

:D

I don't do diesels (diseasels :p), but plenty of plug and play chips/wiring looms with adjustable settings for economy. the rover boys squeeze 150bhp out of their L-series diesels, so anything is possible

Td4 is a frugal engine as it stands,

More fuel economy & performance would be nice :D It accelerates at about the same speed as continental drift :p

Well, I know the full history of the car from new and theres nothing to indicate it has been tuned or remapped. Not that Im complaining if it has :D Any way I can check? And are these "man & van mobile ECU tuning" people any good?

No is the answer ;)
The only way to map a petrol engine with any degree of success is on the rolling road with a PC running dedicated mapping software. There is only so much you can map an engine for and sadly with modern emission controls, economy isn't one of them. If we weren't mandated to have a cat with it's silly over fueling requirements all our cars would be 10 to 20% more efficient than they are!!

Don't get me started on the Green Party own goal fiasco and what it's done for CO2 emissions :(
