hi we had the fgreelander 2 for almost 1 year its 2006, we had problems with the power steering going stiff, we went to land rover and they said there was too much power steering fluid and he drained some out , after this it did not go stiff again but when it went into land rover for the mot it failed on the power steering, their explanation was the wrong fluid had been put in, anyway it was still under warranty with the garage we bought it from so they drained the fluid and flushed the system but this did not fix it so we now have to have a new steering rack( thankfully under warranty) they rang land rover and was told they new about the problem and the steering rack should put it right, if they new there was a problem surely there should have been a recall , has anyone else had this its the hse freelander 2 td4, we are keeping our fingers crossed that this fixes it as the warranty company will not pay for anything other than the steering rack so if it goes on to be the pump or any of the tubes we have to pay.

There's a non servicable filter in the fluid reservoir, it is known for these to get blocked due to the steering racks not being cleaned properly out after manufacture on early FL2's
This results in restricted flow of fluid, which is usually put down to incorrect level/fluid and can cause multiple steering rack failures if the reservoir is not replaced, there's been a few threads about it.

thanks for that how do we solve this , the garage tried dropping the fluid and flushing the system but that did not work and they are now going to put a new steering rack on next week under warranty thank goodness, but if this problem is going to happen again it will be down to us and at approx £1000 for the rack we will have to get rid of it otherwise and it is a fantastic car so i would be gutted, thanks for the reply
