Discos and Classics are silly money at the mo, seems to be only P38's that aren't being inflated by the snow tax at the moment:scratching_chin::) Although 90% of the silly money Discos and Classics I've seen advertised in the last few months are still for sale. Doesn't matter how much snow falls most people seem to realise they're ageing money pits!!
 
If that car is really that good - buy it and keep it for 5 years,use it daily.Then work out how much a disco 4 / RRS /FF RR will lose in the same time.
It is alot of money,but they are a great tool - just depends how you look at it.

It's a two tier market now and there are people who'll pay top whack for a mint Classic instead of trolling around in one of the new ones.

It is an iconic car of the 70s, 80s and 90s so that's a lot of people who grew up wanting one and now have the money.

They spanned 3 decades and hold iconic status in certainly the first 2 decades.

So a knackered v8 with worn cam,crap ignition system,rubbish fuel consumption and a weak badly made block would be better ?

Yep, except there are no weak blocks, just useless engine management. Mines still running fine on its useless mixer based open loop LPG system, returning 19 MPG as well. (that's equiv to 38 MPG cost wise, somewhat better that the tractor version). However the ABS system is FTB

the 72 one looks very much like mine but a little tidier. looks like I made a good investment for about £1200 with the 10 times they are askin for that :D
 
if he sells that,then i am going to buy the one near me...its in the same if not better nick..and atleast 10k cheaper...then i will be selling it!!

No weak blocks...... Hmm,ANY 94 mm bore Rover block can suffer slipped liners,cracks behind the liners and all the problems that go with it.
The 14cux injection system is fine - the first decent attempt at fueling a Rover v8 after SU's.
And your cooker ring gas system wont be fuelling your engine properly,its just you have no real way of telling any different.
If the RR was a 3.5 v8 THEN I could see the point.

You can mess about with scopes, and sensor reading till you are blue in your face, the final truth is always in the composition of the exhaust gases.

As for the blocks, I've never had one in a classic fail, but the P38a is dreadful. Interesting your comments infered about Bosch L-Jetronic, which after K-Jetronic remains the most reliable fuel injection Bosch has ever made.

When I bought my reliability disaster block munching liner slipping 3.9 LPG converted classic, my dad bought a 300TDi disco. During that time the rangie has done twice the millage and never once failed to start and complete trip, and brought the disco home twice, each time due to terminal engine failure.

As I said you have no way of telling - an exhaust gas analyzer is only good for basic tuning or MOT testing.it simply cant respond quickly enough to be any good for things like sudden load or throttle opening.Even with a rolling road it is limited in its use.
I never made any comments about Bosch L or K jetronic.
I base my comments about Rover V8's from many years of running a LR garage specialsing in diagnostic work,I can only say how disappointed I am in the long term reliabilty of ANY of the v8's over 3.5 ltrs - unless they are carefully built with stepped liners you have potential for failure.With the secondhand values of most RR's being so low,(Which must be in part so low because of the poor reputation of the v8 and the cost of repair.) it is hardly suprising so many get scrapped.
Cooker ring gas systems are for forklifts.
