Hi there, first of all I want to say that I love my 2002 Freelander but this last week my stress levels have been sky high. The sunroof seized up in the open position. My son has taken it apart (he was an electrical auto engineer but never worked on a Freelander) and has fitted new sliders. He assembled the unit but it will not work. He thinks that the sliders are in the wrong postion , can anyone tell me where they should be for assembly or any info about assembling the sunroof. All I could find out from the net was an exploded view of the sunroof. Thank you for our help.

Don't know if these will help, I have repaired several sunroof runners with a piece of piano hinge, the last time I took these photos. Can only load 10 so three replies. If anyone is interested the description of how I fixed them is on this thread

Thank you very much for the photos I will pass them on to my son. When you reassemble the unit do the sliders sit at the front of the unit?

If the sliders are the black plastic part that the lug breaks off, photo dscf 0101 shows the broken bit still on the cable in the closed position (I think!!). Seems very close to the front, the ridge in the outer sits in a slot in the bottom runner and the 'L' shaped bracket sits on top of it.

Thanks for your reply. My son has put the new sliders and a new motor in the sunroof but is still unable to close the roof. The motor will not stop running when the opening and closing button is used. have you ever come across this problem? I would be grateful for any ideas. He wondered if there was a 'timer switch'.

Thanks

From closed, when you push the switch it tilts the sun roof, then let go of the switch and push it again and it will fully open. This seems to be controlled by the C.C.U. as there is no timer switch or timer relay. My sunroof has been apart so many times now that sometimes it does this and sometimes it just fully opens straight away, then when it reaches fully open or closed you can hear a rachet mechanism clicking in the motor and let go of the switch. If you take out the glass and loosen the motor bolts so it hangs down and doesn't engage the inner cable, you should be able to close the roof by pushing the slide (that nornally breaks) forward with a screwdriver. The mechanism has to slide forward enough (to the tilt position ) before the slide can twist to allow the roof to drop to the closed position. Have you taken the slider mechanism apart or just put a new one in ?

I've just had a phone call to say that Matt has installed the new motor and sliders and it is working, phew!!!!!!! he says that it is a little temperamental but it is working. I think that i will just keep it closed from now on and thank my lucky stars that I didn't have to take it to a dealer.

I would like to give you a big thank you for all the time and trouble you have taken to help solve this problem. I am disabled and losing the use of the car made me feel very vulnerable.

Once again, thank you so much for your help.

Thanks for the thread ianda, on the basis of this and my loveof repairing things, I have bought a repair kit to refurb my runners, both sides broken as shown in photos. Only problem I have is that the cable inner will not withdraw from outer, having taken motor out. Any tips?? Thanks Andrew

In trouble I have just got a new gear rail for the drivers side sunroof and I have both sides of the sunroof out of the vehicle. I cannot seem to get the tilt and the gear rail in sync same as the other side. I also have the wee pin and plastic nylon block off it out ! really the whole thing is in bits anyone could tell me how to reassemble and solve these issues please. Also when replacing to the roof is it just a matter of pushing in the cables and them finding their way ? Thanks in anticipation.

Hi guys, i'm just hoping that @ianda12 is still around here or any sunroof guru who knows something about the bit pointed with the screwdriver in the second post's last pic(DSCF0098) . it doesnt appear in any repair kit i've seen nor in microcat, any ideas how can i get one?
