Does it make horrible clicking noises when opening the roof ? the sun roofs are a common problem. They are opened by two cables one pulling from each side by a small plastic fitting. The fitting breaks so the roof isn't pulled square and jams, usually breaking the other side. I have repaired four of these so far.I have been told a new one costs £400 complete and are still made of plastic.

yes sounds about right and you can see it only pulls on one side. is it an easy fix???

cheers

How long have you got !!!!!
Remove sun roof by
Unclip plastic capping inside (both sides)
remove glass
remove interior light
unbolt roof motor
stand through sunroof opening unscrew slider mech. that isn't pulling open (its held in with torx screws and a bit of sealant ) and remove with drive cable
seperate the two halves of mechanism by sliding apart. you need to GENTLY lever the plastic cog and rack to get apart. try not to break off any of the teeth.
the bit you want is a black plastic moulding about 3 inches long by 1 inch wide. it should have a 1/2 inch long U shaped groove in it.the cabe end sits in this groove and pulls/pushes it along to move the roof.
the chances are you will not have this groove because it has broken off. as it is only about 1mm thick plastic.
find a bit of small brass piano hinge ( B&Q) remove the pin and cut a piece the same length as the broken bit of plastic.
open the hole in the hinge to make a J shape big enough to take the drive cable
file the broken bit flat
chain drill a slot through the plastic where it has broken or use a broken hacksaw blade
because of the shape of the moulding the slot has to be a bit shorter than the broken bit and you have to cut a bit of the flat part of the hinge and push it in the slot.
you have to glue the hinge in the plastic bit with araldite/ epoxy resin/e metal or similar
i drilled some small holes in the plastic and the hinge to allow the glue to form around it and filled up the well in the plastic bit
make sure the cable will fit in the new metal groove and is able to run freely in the runner when you glue it in.
when set put together (if you can remember how it came apart)
lubricate it well with teflon or silicon oil and put it back in the car.
it should all work.
on mine when you opened the roof it stopped at tilted and you had to press the button again to slide it open, now it tilts and opens on one continous push.theres a switch in the motor you have to get in the right position and mine now isnt, but as it all works fine I couldn't be bothered to spend any more time on it
best of luck but at least it shouldn't break again as it is now metal not plastic, just wait for the other side to go.

Thanks for the time and all the info ianda, I'll give that a tackle when the weather clears up...

It Tilts and slides back perfectly, but stops halfway on closing and sounds like a gear jumping, a little push and it goes back to the tilts, then sticks there another little push on the lift arm and it closes.

Not so easy when you've got one hand on the button another on the roof and a distinct shortage of hands for the steering wheel... :D

Cheers.

I think the gearing in the roof motor can jump if the roof sticks, keep the runners and mechanism well lubricated it may stop it breaking and save you a lot of hassle !!!

the interior lights are easier than the sunroof! On mine, condensation from the sunroof leaked into the interior light. This corroded varoius bits on the little circuit board and switches. The worst of it was the bit of circuit board where the power supply wires are joined to it. Got a replacement from breakers yard and swapped them over. Plenty of wd40 on it to repel moisture. No probs since. My sunroof has gone the same way tho! So will do it in the summer.

i have sorted a replacement light and roof lining as mine has a few marks on it so when i collect them will see if thats the problem, think it will be as i have power going to the light board but not from it

heres hoping

Sun roof/dog stink ventilation hole

Hi

Thanks for the info input on the sunroof thread.

Before I rip mine to bits in eagerness to replace the appropriate bits with piano hinge, can I ask a bit of advice.

My s/roof opens as normal, but will not retract without hand intervention as the rhs appears to stick. With a little pressure on the front edge it closes but will not lower into position, on the rhs, which leaves a sort of squint level sunroof that is open all the way along the rear. But not open equally.

Do you think that your method should help cure this? Thunder storms are inbound so I'm due for a wet behind in the morning.

Once I get this fixed, I time to get flog the great heap. It really has proved to be a bottomless pit.

cheers

should open drivers door only on 1st press, then all doors on 2nd press, but only one press to lock

Hi guys new to the forum, got myself a freelander Td4 last Thursday from a dealer, and on the Friday the sunroof stuck open, getting it done on the warranty but they've had the car since last Saturday, realistically how long should this take to repair.

Chris

Hi Chris
Mine wasn't on warranty so I did it myself with the help of a series of photos someone put on this link.
There's no need to remove the headliner as stated in the manual, so if they replace it with new parts it should be 2 hours ..if they know what they are doing.
The genuine parts are very expensive (£150 each arm) so I think they may try and replace the one part which which usually fails. (£15 )
The good news is that the motor and cable gear used are very robust and that will not be the fault, its bound to be poor servicing (no one ever greases the tilt mechanism) , so it strains the plastic holder of the cable and it breaks off inside the slide bar.
Hope this helps
