With batteries and Discovery you need to get the best you can, so how do you judge this?

Disco ES has lots of nice electrical bits that need powering, so I would suggest a minimum of an 85a/hr battery.

For starting a Discovery diesel on a cold morning you need lots of CCA (cold cranking amps), I would suggest a minimum of 800cca.

There is a company called Tanya Batteries (do a Google search) that do Numax marine batteries with a cca of 1000, that'll start your Disco in the coldest of weather.

Minimum recommended CCA for a Disco is 570CCA, but as thebiglad said get the largest CCA you can fit.

but make sure that, if you have the "top hat" shaped clamp, that the battery has the correct cut-outs to enable you to clamp it - I know that Halfrauds recomend a battery that doesnt fit!

I'm just in to the 9th year with my 072 Halfords battery so I think I wll be looking for a replacement soon and the Numax battery looks good, but what happens if wish to claim under the warranty do you send it back to Tayna and pay the carrage and be without a battery untill they agree it's duff.

There's something to be said for buying locally may be.

Hi all, Ive got a bosch s4 027 630a battery fitted to my 96 tdi and in the snow weve just had and minus 3 temps when i went out in the morning to start her she turned over slowly, jump start no probs then fine untill the next morning. I've had the battery and alternator checked they are fine. Has anyone got any ideas as to the cause?

Cheers dave

It could be poor earths but to be honest if it's started to misbehave in the colder weather it'll be the battery, unfortunately.

Just my opinion but Halfords every time for batterys they are all over, they swop them without needing a mongolian sheeps foot and a soulth african egal feather!

And get a trade card first and they are not that overpriced!

But I know its not for everyone!

how do you get a hlafords trade card?

"High Volume Parts Buyer
(or frequent user of car parts)"

So you dont even have to be in the trade! lol Just prove you buy a lot of car parts!

Hey Discool did you get yours?

I may have to start and have a "novelty" payslip printing service on the side! lol Need a loan???? No Probs! :D

Hi 2U, not yet :( I was trying to be a sole trader but I'm unable to prove the part buying bit so it may the payslip way and i'm still working on that one, it's so easy to get other trade cards not with Halfords though :)

Yer they are worried that people will buy there stuff then sell it on Ebay! Showing there RRP! (Thats what they guy said to me anyhow!)

PM me your address and I will stick a payslip (or a few so can demo print one) in the post to you! (Don't expect a cheque with it tho! I will let you fill it in with your garage details!)

Who said the old ones are the best?:)

Just been to Halfords for a new battery for 1989 TD

And following all the useful info on this thread just picked up their own brand,

12v 95Ah 800CCA with a three year guarantee.

Was £110 but with Tradecard paid £82 that 25% discount and a great battery for the motor at a fair price.

Thanks for all the useful tips:tea:
