Hi all, following on from my previous posts regarding the lack of power which i later found out to be caused by not having any turbo boost at all, i got holdof a 2nd hand manifold and turbo from a parts dealer on eBay, it came witha 60 day swap-out warranty so it seemed ok to risk it.

Anyway, 2 hours of spanner-work and a bit of sweat later, it was fitted and running. A road test shows a healthy 11-12psi of boost at 2500-3200rpm and a much more realistic driving experience, she will now pull in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.

The old unit was stripped on the bench and the reason discovered...

Now, the question is, WHAT HAPPENED??? There was no shrapnel in the cooler so i can only guess that it happened some time pre-purchase. Ther was no damage to the intake scroll either.

I also discovered a leaking exhaust gasket on cylinders 1 & 4, no gasket on the turbo oir return pipe and the copper washers on the turbo feed pipe were fitted wrong.

Answers on a postcard:)

Jeez .. summat's got in there at some point though .. or the pipe's come adrift whilst running, did the damage and the previous owners just put it back together, got it running and flogged it on!

thats looks as if it has been ground off with an angle grinder....If something had got into the turbo there would be chunks missing and it wound not be as uniform as what is shown in the picture. Grinding all of the fins back would stop any whistling noise if the fins were damaged but the down side is, the cars runs as a N/A diesel.

Sorry but no way, that turbo had not been apart for a very long time. I had to beat seven colours of crap out of it to get the units to split.

Whats the point of doing so anyway???

NEWS JUST IN !!!!!!!!!!

I have just heard from someone that suffered the same fate, turns out that water from wading got sucked in, ripped all the blades off the turbo and blew them out the rubber outlet elbow.

Was told that at the speed they run, water is the same as shoving a spanner in there.

Well thats a new one on me dave.... but then again.....a high pressure water cutter can go through 12mm steel plate like a hot knife thru butter.
