Hi

How do you check auto-box fluid level on a 2001 Disco?

Do you change ATF? and when?

I know ashcrofts don't recomend it if it's never been done as new fluid can flush out crap that blocks the "thinky jobby" loseing gear shift. Mine had a new box 15k ago so would like to look after it if need be.

Land Rover main dealers change the oil in the box at 24.000 miles. As far as I'm aware thats the only time the oil is changed. So if you have 15.000 on a new box it should be alright for another 9000 miles. Saying that I'm about to do an oil and filter change on my box. I have 110.000 on mine. Far as I know the only way to check the oil level is by getting under the vehicle and taking the fill bung out..........

24K same as the manuel box then,

Thought as much for the level, there is a plug half way up the side of the gearbox sump, dunt have to be running or anything silly does? it like with some other autos!
 
This info was taken from Ashcroft's site, it seems more involved to refill than for a D1 auto box.

The later P38"s and the Disco II don"t have dipsticks on the autobox, instead on the front face of the sump they have a filler level plug, The fill proceedure is first to put the transfer case in neutral so theres no load, fill with oil until the oil overflows, autobox in N, start the engine, it will suck all the oil up so you need to pump like crazy to top it back up until it overflows again, put the transfer case in high and move the shifter up and down the gate a few times, a few seconds in each position, check level, the engine revs should now drop when you shift from N to D as it takes up load, plug in, test drive, check level, engine running in N".
 
A similar thread prompted this link to be attached to a reply, I checked it out and although the guy must sleep with his TD5 as he loves it that much its a superb site covering all manner of TD5 issues.
