so lets assume he has the smarts not to put his bulb in the wrong in the first place, whats gonna happen if he does as yer say and turns it around?
if he then manages to get it in it will be the wrong way round and what can happen is the glass will then break away from the metal bit, leaving him with a bust bulb jammed in the wrong way round.

course if he checks it furst and finds that it was in the right way round due to him being smart enough to do so, what would you suggest next?

If you were checking the earth at the contacts of the bulb (in case of corrosion to the contacts) you would have to remove said bulb any way.

by the way if ever you do as slob has said and smash a bulb in its holder. rather thann try and twist and yank it out with pliers (and risk damaging the housing) cut a potato in half and shove it over the broken cap and twist. It doesn't work 100% of the time but it does in the majority of cases.

yer have to be pretty stupid to get the bulb in arse about face.

Well, I appear to have ticked that box quite nicely.
What's next?

Popped the bulb out at lunch and turned it round and bingo all was good.

Slob: cheers for assuming I was competent at this sort of thing - I always assumed that the increase in brightness was due to a higher voltage coming into the bulb when brake light went on, thus assuming the single filament and thus putting the bulb in any old how. I'll try harder next time

Cheers all

Ross

I don't know but as it went in as easily one way as the other I guess it is pretty knackered. I need to get a new plastic housing if not a new unit as I can no longer screw the light cover onto the plastic as it isn't there. Gaffer tape is a poor substitute
