Will a recon gearbox add value to the disco?

The disco needs a new gearbox and a new/recon box will cost around £500.

I'm looking to sell it now as I need a car with good economy so what I wan't to know is will it be worth getting a new/recon box on her then selling? i.e. will I make a better profit doing this or should I just stick a 2nd hand box in from a breakers?

It's in good condition other than the box.
 
200tdi. I have a box without the bell housing on to get shot of. Was a great box but didn't need as I just wanted the engine.

Ah thanks munkey but mine is a 300tdi.. so different gearbox isn't it? :(

Well it looks like I'll be searching for a decent used box then!

Frankly if it's that bad, you could do worse than having a go at rebuilding, or at least fixing what's broken inside it, yourself! It's not like you can feck it up is it? ;)
 
To be honest you can pick up gearboxes cheap, why fk about?

'cos you can ..

'cos you can't make it worse and it might only cost your time ..

'cos you have to take the fecked one off anyway and if you can't afford another, however cheap you say they are, then it makes sense.

No sweat, and to be honest I'd probably want it fixed quickly so would probably buy a recon/second hand unit .. but I'd definitely have the old nackered unit on a bench somewhere, have it opened and see what's broken at least. Try to refurb it and either keep as a spare or sell on .. no time-limit, no hassle, good fun! ;)
 
Well I got a second hand box on ebay and it seems OK. Not much play in the main shaft, unlike the original, no grinding sound when you turn the shaft as there is with the original.

The old box is out, dismantled, and the new box has been assembled with the gear lever unit and transfer box from the old one.
Tomorrow is putting it all back in...

Question.. any simple way to get the box from the ground and into the car? Last time it took two of us to and 3 jacks to hold it up enough to put the cross member back in. A gearbox jack seems ideal but we don't have one.

The transfer box didn't have much oil in and the old gearbox oil was not nice looking.. full of metal filings, most of it stuck to the magnetic plug.

Should I flush the new box, and if so, with what?
 
I normaly stick it back in with a trolly jack and a lot of care(of myself there kin heavy)

Yeah they are heavy..and awkward!

Unfortunately the jacks we have don't go high enough so it was a case of jack it with one then add another jack with wood/bricks under it... lift again and repeat etc. A right pain!

Hi, when i changeed my box i put a scaffold tube throuh windows . Hung chainhoist on it , winched gearbox up
