Yesterday Morning was heading out for the day I started my 2006 Vogue L322 up and the coolant warning notice, so I topped her up with coolant and set off, as I pulled up at a set of lights I noticed a rather large amount of white smoke coming out the exhaust, I drove for 10 more minutes until I turned her off for a few hours. Started her back up and again white smoke coming out the back within 200m the temperaturegauge was up to half way, I drove for a few minutes and the smoke was getting worse so I pulled over again turned her off for a few minutes and then she would not startagain, got recovered back to my home address, next morning I tried jumping the car and she started up again but the whitesmoke is worse, however on initial start up it takes a few minutes before the white smoke comes out. I know I have a coolant leak as it is already empty and white smoke means head gasket just hoping someone can give me a bit more clarification on the matter

Thanks Mike.

If head gasket was leaking it would be pressurising header tank. More likely a coolant leak into the inlet somewhere.

You need to find the source of the leak. That's likely to involve taking things apart.

Does it pressurise the system?
Sniffer test for combustion gases in the coolant.
Delay in the white smoke - assuming it's steam - is likely to be the period in which the system starts to build up a bit of pressure & forces the coolant into the cylinder.
If it's petrol - you don't say which - then pull the plugs & see if any look very clean compared to the others which would suggest that's the cylinder(s) affected as the plug(s) are being steam cleaned.

Thank you, the car is diesel, also pressurise you can hear the coolant fizzing from the fill up point, when the engine is running and for a while after.

You did not say that in your first post. To diagnose anything the symptoms must be correctly stated.

Oh its the derv! ;)

Ah the Jag petrol's are pretty bomb proof.

EGR coolers on the TDV8 can cause loss of coolant coz they leak innit' ;)

And a knackered turbo or 2 will cause white smoke..

Could still be HG so get a sniff test done ;)

There are many more possible causes for losing coolant on the L322 than HG failure modes!

Expansion tank crack is very common, as is radiator issues, brittle plastic coolant pipe connections, holed heater matrix etc and on the V8 add in the rear engine manifold and its connection pipes, valley pan and gasket, water pump shaft and the valley pipes.........

Sniffer test.
Is the white smoke steam - may dissipate quite quickly - or a lingering cloud smelling strongly of diesel & may make your eyes sting?
