Recently serviced my new purchase using 10-40 semi synthetic however since the service I have noticed a sligjt "tappetty" rattle when cold, this disappears when the engine is warm, should I be using a thinner oil? Whats everyone else using?

V8's do not like all these synthetic and semi synthetic oils. Valvoline seems to be the most recommended. I have only ever used a good quality multigrade 10-40, usually Valvoline or failing that, Castrol GTX and change the oil& filter every 4-5000 miles without fail.
Tappet noise is very common after the engine has been stood overnight, this is due to valve spring pressure causing oil to bleed from the hydraulic lifters and clearances increased until they are refilled after start up. Nothing to worry about if all goes quiet in less than a minute.

Thanks for that, I will drop the oil this evening and refil, probably put an engine flush through it while I am at it. The tappetty noise certainly lasts longer than a minute, usually until warm, it is a very faint noise which you need the window open to hear, may even just be my paranoia as I have not had much luck since purchasing this car last month, all other faults sorted now so I am getting there!

Over the years have always used 20/50,although have been known to use on occasions 15/50,and always changing the filter at the same time.
This being done at intervals of 3000/4000 miles.
Some might disagree about the regularity but then that's down to personnal choice .:D

Yup, 20/50 here too
I've used Lucas 20/50 racing oil in my V8's for years and never had a problem
If it's good enough for Nascar then it's good enough for me
Started using it on an old 3.5 V8 110 many moons ago - it had a really noisy tappet on start up
The additives in the racing oil shut it up instantly - used it ever since

Thanks guys,
Been down to local motor factors and asked for 20/50 and I may as well asked for glider engine oil! Just a very blank look from a spotty 16 year old! I will try a bigger store later in the day!
