i noticed yesterday one of my rear wheel bearings felt a bit loose so today I was going to tighten it up. I found there was no locking tab and in fact all that was there was the nut and a spacer - if I undo the nut I could probably pull the hub straight off! It's been like it for at least 4 years since I bought it. Question is, is this normal for the rear or has someone just done it wrong?! It's a 2000 TD5 90...

To be fair I haven't looked at rave yet but I was concerned there's nothing stopping it coming loose. I'll have a look tomorrow. I've always thought front and rear were the same, and the fronts are definitely not like this

Wil you enlighten me about the different types of bearings? I thought if they're not adjustable they'd be the flat sealed type, sorry I don't know the technical term!

I thought all were the same bearings just the later cars had a single nut that could be converted back to the older two nut system.

I think in the TD5 style there is a spacer between the two inner races so that when you tighten the nut everything is clamped but the bearings don't get crushed. With the two nut version there is no spacer hence the low torque requirement when setting the adjustment.

if you have play in new bearings using that spacer then you need a thinner spacer, spacer is only used so theres no need to set wheel bearings as was just fully tighten a nut
