There's a clunk when taking up drive in my defender 200tdi 90. It's been like that for a while and I can't get to the bottom of it. It's also coupled with a bit of vibration from the transmission, but this is new. Clunk sounds like it's coming from the engine or transmission.

It's not the UJs or propshaft, checked and have been replaced.

It's not the gearbox main shaft or transfer box as I had these rebuilt a while back and it didn't make any difference. Although, I haven't taken the PTO cover off yet to double check.

Not sure what else to check?

A frame? Front diff?

Any help much appreciated

Assuming the UJ's and mainshafts are good, as above, A-frame, trailing arm bushes and all shock bushes would be my first check, then maybe front radius arms and steering rod TRE's ... Mind, it could easily be duff clutch springs. I'd also look over the half shafts, drive members, very loose wheel bearings or loose pinion/diff bearings etc .. ;)

Thanks guys. I'll have a look at the A frame ball joint.

The shock bushes are ok I think, as are the wheel bearings.

There is a leak from the rear diff pinion oil seal so could be the bearings there but it sounds like something from the front.

Is there anything engine related that can do this?

Clutch springs broken/loose/missing, loose/broken flywheel, worn splines on any splined connector shaft .. have fun .. ;)

9 times out of 10 a clunk on take-up is driveline or suspension. The only way, incidentally, to easily test (without a large pry-bar and/or hammer) the suspension bushes is with the vehicle jacked up on the chassis so the suspension hangs free and the bushes allowed to move if they're worn. Many bushes 'wear-in' to the worn bits, so when stood on it's wheels the Landy bushes might feel OK.

My money would be on the drive members. This is also an easy and modest cost job.
My 110 did the same changed all 4. Fronts were the culprit but changed the rears also because it was cheaper to by a set of 4.

Mine got a lot quieter when I changed the drive flanges too. A tiny bit of movement at the splines can make a big noise.

I would get a pry bar, and test the A frame joint and radius arm bushes first, then the axle to radius arm ones Quick and easy. If not, move on to the splined bits, starting with drive members, working back to trans box.
As Paul D says ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^, the clutch springs and/ or splines are a common issue as well.

Just to keep you all posted the clunk was from the front diff. Need to replace that? Difficult job?
its more work than the rear as you either need to strip it back to swivel housing to remove half shafts or undo chrome balls, you can leave brake pipes connected if you support assembly as theres enough movement to disengage shafts from diff, once unbolted from axle tube, you can reseal ball to axle tube with rtv silicone sealant
