I have just put an app on my phone called what3words
the ideaa of this app is that every 3 sq meters of this earth is given 3 words to identify the wher the three sq meters is located
it is being used by emergency services as to identify where the incident is happening. like if you were lost in the desert and had mobile coverage and internet the person could be asked to download the app and give the 3 words that identifie their location and the emergency services can position them within a 3 sq m box.
just interesting and nothing to do with range rover.
 
Heard of it. Never seen it. Remember it being proposed maybe 5 years ago or maybe the guys that dreamed it up were on breakfast TV or similar. Do you need latitude and longitude?

If you have phone or internet connection and location is turned on, you can be found to within a few metres.
 
you can get it for smart watches too - to use an example the centre of Nelson's Column is woven.track.drank

have had it on my phone for ages. Local police and other emergency services recommend it for if we go up on moors or such like.

no you just download the ap and the GPS picks up where you are and gives you the three words like speculates.bangers .shires
and if u type that in it will take u there
 
Google or Apple Maps does the same thing. Simply send the emergency services your location !!

"what3words" is for people that don't know how to use their smartphones
 
In either maps app, tap your current location which is usually highlighted with a blue dot. Google & Apple Maps both give option to "share my location". You can send via text, email or whatever you use. There's also plenty of free GPS apps that give exact coordinates.

No need to have another commercial company do it for you when Google & Apple already use your location data. Who knows what they are doing with the data ?

If you have basic phone coverage, then SMS will work, because it uses the 2G, 3G or 4G rather than data plan. Data not required for location on maps, but the map will have minimal detail.

Also 999 can now accept sms, and convert to spoken info for the emergency services operators. Alternatively if you're speaking to them, they can provide a suitable txt number to send to.

"what3words" might appear to be free, but somebody is paying . . . . eventually the consumer by another route !!

They are doing nothing with mine as I always have location turned off unless I'm actually using maps/navigation.
