Welding with car batteries

Ha, would never have thought of this. Great for emergency situations when out and about in the middle of nowhere or on expedition (especially if you have a split-charge system).

I'll now make sure i've got some welding sticks in the car...

(sorry if it's old news and been posted before, I did a search but didn't really find anything)

I have seen this before. Nice garage trick, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to do out on a green lane somewhere, and of course you could blind/burn yourself, making a bad thing much worse.

And risk draining/damaging battery so once you've welded whatever up, you can't start your landy

Back in the 1950s, before arc or MIG kit was a consumer item, that's pretty much what DIY welding kits were. I don't suppose it did the batteries much good.

I think it's a really good trick obviously it's nicer in the workshop but could just get you home and if you are out laning you shouldn't be out on your own so you could get a jump obviously it would be last resort.

I welded a spanner when I touched the wrong ends accidentally when connecting up an inverter. Couldn't believe the energy produced and the state of the spanner. It was my favourite 13mm too.

On the there tele box program called Alaska off road warriors one of the teams cut bits of metal off the roof rack and battery welded them together to make a land anchor.

When I was about 13 I had a honda vision that wouldn't turn over. To test the battery I put a good size bit of cable on one terminal and brushed it across the other and it blew the top off the battery! Ive been weary of vehicle batteries ever since.

Best I've heard of was a painter who set his metal paint pot on one of the telephone exchange bus bars (thousands of amps). His overalls weren't white afterwards!

Ive tried this in the shed A while ago when it was posted befor and it does work and was strong enough, wasn't the best but then my arc welding with a welder ain't the best neither.
