unhealthy sounding noise !

o.k get what your'e saying but how come once eas was back on and working noise went , eas inactive warning now back on and eas not working and noise / slip re accurs instantainiously ?

Can't answer that one. I have never had this problem on a P38 but it is almost same fault as my daughters Spacewagon. If she turns left and touches brake ever so slightly the clonk is evident. This is the ABS putting the brake on and off because it thinks one wheel is locking up when in fact all it is doing is going around a smaller radius than the outer wheel. In this case as the vehicle is turned left, because of bad reading from the NS sensor it thinks the NS wheel is locking, because it is moving slower than the OS wheel, so it pulses the brake on and off causing the clonk. But the clonk comes from the OS wheel. Would think that if the problem only occurs on brake application it is an ABS fault if it happens without any brake application it is a traction control fault. Sorry cannot be more specific. May not be but worth a look.

what is a can bus error ?

CAN Bus is a system of transmitting data between various ECU's on the car. CAN Bus errors suggest that the data is being corrupted which is why I suggested bad connections. This could indeed fool the system into activating traction control which applies the brake to the wheel it thinks is slipping possibly producing the noise you hear.

I'm inclined to agree with Wammers, it's ABS sensor related and could be the sensor or in view of the CAN bus error messages in the wiring or connections associated with ABS ECU or one of the other ECU's involved

I seem to think that L322s do have a steering angle sensor although quite what it's used for and how I don't know. Tied in with hill descent etc? Just remember seeing something elsewhere. Must be somewhere on the steering column.

Cannot see a steering angle sensor being mounted on the steering column. It would have to be some sort of potentiometer with a split travel of 180 degrees in either direction and a null point. As the steering wheel moves more than 360 degrees in either direction cannot see that being the case. Maybe something of that sort fitted to the steering box would work but not on the column itself.

A steering angle sensor is very unlikely to be on the steering column although it would be possible as 10 turn potentiometers are readily available. If a steering angle sensor is fitted, I would expect to see it connected to the steering box output arm (drop arm):D

Yes or the shaft it is attached to.

 completely lost with all this tech jargon now !, had codes all cleared on fri morning and removed drivers wheel , checked and cleaned abs sensor connections and made sure wires were not fowling on anything and crossed my fingers ! , "what do you know 24 hrs later abs noise and eas warning are back" , really ****ed now as it looks like i am going to have to bite the bullet and book her into land rover dealers , just dont fancy having several parts changed at great expense before they find and rectify the fault !
any advice on " dealing with the dealers " or any more ideas would be most appreciated.

regards
Dave

hi ,
wish i could report that it's a big :) but guess what .......:( BOLLOX :( BOLLOX :( AND LOADS MORE BOLLOX ! :( , after everything it did turn out to be the o/s/f suspension strut . so 24 hrs after it went into stratstones it's done and so am i to the tune of £755 , there goes my bonus for the next few months !.

All said i still love the car to bits and considering i got her at a great price and the fact that stratstones have given her the " full check over " and said that i was really unlucky as these struts very rarely fail and apart from the strut the car is in great mechanical condition and a "very nice example" , so i will like all of us take a deep breath, swallow the cost and................. wait for the next thing !

Thanks for all help and advice. :)

You have got me a little bemused here. P38 and Range Rovers in general don't have suspension struts. So what exactly did they change?

had same problem on one of my late classics, was the ABS sensor on the wheel where the noise is coming from because its trying to lock the diff and making the wheel skip.
