The wife was out in our 99 td5 discovery she said it started to overheat and went into limp mode. I'm trying to diagnose the problem. There's no milky spots in the oil. I got everything crossedone that it's not the head gasket but not sure any input will be much appreciated

if its the head gasket as it is at the moment there would be no signs except pressurisation ie losing coolant on a journey, ensure its filled with the air bleed screw out in the top hose ,look for leaks ,most td5s seem to lose some coolant and if not checked regularly can reach a situation where it over heats but theres no serious problem,

She's just got back and the coolant is empty.... I asked her to check and her respouse was what's that ! So there must be a leak I'll go check

Always worth checking it is not the coolant expansion tank pressure cap.

They have been known to fail over time and release pressure too early. the fluid will come out of the overflow pipe from tank cap.

Although they normally settle out at about an inch lower than the seam in the expansion tank.

Cheers

No obvious leaks
Cracked head and if left damaged block and replacement engine.

Found the problem split pipe.... just got to get a replacement now.... typical for a Sunday thank you for all your comments and knowledge
