Hi, I hope someone can help here, its doing my heed in!! I have a 2000 td4.. been no bother, its got 120k on clock we've had it for about a year now...
The other day i was parked on a hill waiting for mrs, engine ticking over nicely, when it just stopped, like it had ran out of fuel..... it had plenty fuel in, but ive put a further 10 ltrs in since, anyway, towed it home, but still now joy? the under bonnet pump whirs then cuts out after bout 20 seconds, I know this is norm, but my question is a) why would it have stopped and b)most likely cause and fix? fuel filter under the bonnet perhaps? we've never changed it, and probs neither the last owner. whats the best way of removing the filter? thanks in advance, Dave

Stab in the dark here, sold my 2001 ages ago so going from memory.
Could it be the switch that cuts out in an accident, think its on the right as you look under the bonnet, behind the battery if i remember.
The filters are easy enough to change.

thanks Nifty, checked that switch, it was ok, wondering if this model has the pump under rear wheel arch, asweii as the under bonnet one?

I honestly dont know, my 2006 has the pump and the filter under the rear wheel arch, a lot of bits are different to the 2001 i had.
I do know 60,000 miles on the same filter is a bloody long time, change mine every service.

When the pump/filter goes, it will often struggle before it won't start/dies.

I'm no expert on the TD4 (or any engine infact) but I'd be inclined to think its the cam sensor or a harness.

I take it there's no MIL light lit? Might be worth plugging in a diagnostic code reader.

thanks buddy, no fault code or anything, gonna check theres a pump under wheel arch, had bloody work troday!! never got chance to check.

ok, an update, mine has pump in tank... disconected the outlet fuel pipe and turned ignitition on, expected to be showered in fuel, nope not a drop!! so, im off to get my volt meter to test test power supply... anyone tell me which relay powers this pump? cheers Dave

on a 2000 your main pump is in the tank and there is another one next to a filter under the bonnet on the right hand side as you look at it.some times the ones under the bonnet are a pig to get out of their holder. if it has run out of fuel it may have sucked up a load of rubbish and when you take the pump out of the tank there is a small filter on the bottom be careful but clean it

cool thanks buddy, but it appears the in tank pump is shot... was hoping it was just the relay, but on testing with volt meter found it was getting 12v

sorry, I meant it was getting 12v at pump... just when I tested earlier it must have timed out before I got tester on it.
