Gents,
Got a good deal on a partial respray but I need new hinges. Foundry do a full front set for a Defender with shims and stainless bolts.
My two questions are is the Foundry kit any good and secondly do you need to take the hinges apart to get paint into the nooks.?
 
On filling nooks....:eek::confused:..... D1 rear door hinges are a similar design, and all I do is spray the nooks first, with several coats, allowing time to dry as usual, .... and then paint the main bit of the hinge when the nooks are full o_O:)

I wouldn't take the hinges to bits - doubt the modern ones are of sufficient quality to stand it - IMHO the D1 hinges I've fitted are not OEM quality - just OEM (!) YMMV
 
I bought a new set of (standard) hinges for the rebuild. Had them sprayed with all of the body panels. Bought a stainless bolt kit, which were a tight fit as the heads pulled in. Didn't realise they were scraping their way in. Now, I too, have rusty brown stains on my hinges. :( Apparently, it's fairly common knowledge that you need to reduce the diameter of the heads. At some point they will have to come off, repainted, bolts in the drill and heads turned down a bit :rolleyes:

I didn't paint them for about a year as I knew I was going to get it resprayed. The Defender has been resprayed but the garage did a lousy job and the paint has come off the hinges in places. I don't think they used any sort of primer on the hinges before spraying them. However there has never been any sign of them rusting.

+1 - another job on the long finger.
 
I'm in the same boat, most of the hinges on my 110 are failing and need replacing shortly. Though painting them is a dick punch.

I replaced the hinges on my old 90, with the HD TD5 hinges from Paddocks (Britpart) the surface quality was awful and really had to be sanded alot to get a smooth finish. Stupidly I forgot to degrease or use any acid etch. I went straight on with 2 coats Halfords high build primer which smoothed out the dings a little, sanded back and another coat. Then x2 coats with a rattle can and a final coat of lacquer. They lasted all of half a day before the where chipped where the door opened too far.

Maybe it would have been better with a couple coats acid etch first, maybe not. Plus when painting it was rather hard to get the paint into all the little crevices, as mentioned the stainless bolts took a layer of paint off as the went in...

I would buy the best ones you can afford. I'm contemplating some of the fancy hinges now to avoid the paint drama. EDIT - I'll deal with the paint drama, £500+ for a set of 110 hinges :eek::eek::eek:
