Just got back from work in the last 100 yards started belching out lots of smoke(James bond style) would say it's white but stinks of burnt oil it's not coming from the turbo or breather and the engine had a high pitch whine when I pulled up.head gasket?.300tdi edc.

For how much work it is to check it's certainly the best place to start

Just warmed her up and done a head sniffer test and passed no smoke either took for a little drive and as soon as I got some throttle on smoke and just short of home blew the turbo hose off my fault hadn't done the clip up but then found it dripping with engine oil so the turbo seals have gone.as the turbo fins are badly worn going to replace.had a look at turbo cartridges any good?.

I've never done one but I know @danny6801 has had experience and success doing so

After much reading and eBay decided for a replacement unit £200 ace turbos are only 13 miles away.will still have to fit myself to keep cost down.the only thing I'm concerned about is the sudden failure of the turbo had no smoke issue at all next moment lots and lots of smoke.

Yeah its easy to replace the cartridges in them just make sure u use releasing fluid on all the nuts and bolts about a week before u do it to make sure it works.

All gone well except Haynes states there is a gasket between the turbo and manifold didn't see one taking it off and can't find any reference to one.or does the heat shield do this?.

what part number did you get as their web site is showing the wrong data for my 300 tdi EDC, wrong engine code and only 113 bhp instead of 122 and 13psi instead of 15psi.

15001129365331882267562.jpg I did see that but I ordered mine by giving the turbo number after I cross referenced it to make sure.turbo is held onto the manifold by four bolts.

Is there a rule of thumb for initial setup for the boost or will it be ok as i need to drive work this week.going to order a gauge and pipe 4mm id? And reading best from intake manifold?.

Well a complete waste of time new turbo is doing the same thing oil in the inlet side and oil pouring out of the blowing manifold to down pipe gasket.either it was a bad unit or something else is at play here. ideas please as right now I just want to burn it.

I did check that all is clear.oil seal failure was sudden and catastrophic will only leak oil when under load (driving) in park no smoke even when revs are held high.now please correct me if my theory is out.
1 high oil pressure first thought pressure relief valve stuck I know the oil pressure will rise with revs but is it higher when driven?.
2 head gasket leaking into oil way or crankcase. Pressure will be higher in combustion chambers when driven as there under load?.
3 piston ring blow by engine sounds the same and no loss of performance I would like to think unlikely.
Bit busy at mo but was going to take it for a short run with the filler cap off and a bit of rag over the hole this should relive any pressure in the crankcase?.
Please give me feedback on these as I know how to fix most things but my theory knowledge is not very good.just a pic of the downpipe to manifold join black and sticky inside.just remembered had a high pitched whine coming from the passenger side for about 3 seconds after turning off head gasket?.

All fixed in this case head ( multiple cracks/warped) head gasket was causing build up of crankcase pressure which will slow the rate of oil that could drain out of the turbo so it found another way out pass the seals.mind you it did smoke some for a few miles just burning off oil in the exhaust.
