I hope to be fitting the replacement engine to the Freelander Td4 next week complete with new clutch/slave cylinder etc.
I haven't had much dealings with electronics ( and the Td4 has plenty of them) and I was wondering would there be any point in changing over the various sensors from the original engine to the replacement ?
Any ideas on how best to repair the hole in the rocker cover where a mounting post for the air filter cover got broken off near the oil filler cap ? I just want to seal the hole as the mounting can be done without .

Any other advice on dos and donts when getting everything back together greatly appreciated.

If you are replacing a TD4 with a replacement TD4 - then if it comes with sensors fitted use those. If not, remove from the donor (old) engine and swap over to the new.

Can you swap the rocker cover from the old engine to the new??

Check yer timing chain while engine out, dont worry bout sensors, till after ,change ya belts while engine oot as they are a reet pig ta do. . .un best oh luck. . .:) :) :)

The engine is from an 06 and has less than 10K mls according to the yard where we got it so I thought the timing chains should be OK .
I didnt change the rocker cover (even though it has a small hole in it where a mounting post got knocked off ) as it would involve removing injectors etc and reading other posts removing the injectors seemed best avoided if possible - should I change the cam sensor ?
I am also using the inlet manifold from the old engine as the other one was broken in two places .
Can these be prevented from starting until the oil has been circulated and the oil light goes out - or would this cause other problems ?

If its as ya say an 06 dont bother with the t/chain,i wouldnt bother with the cam sensor neither ,however will be worth ya while to put penatration round the injectors and see if ya can get em orft if ya can lube the threads wiv anti seize this could be a great help in the future ,and clean out all the ****e inside the inlet. . .and er best oh luck. . .:)

Just to say thank you for all the help with the Td4 . I replaced the engine and used the sensors that came with the replacement engine , connected everything up and it started up immediately and ran perfectly although when I took it on the road it struggled to reach 30mph .Thanks to the forum I knew where to go next - unplugged the MAF and its been like it should be since.
So I am now in the process of sourcing a MAF - the local main dlr wants 238 euro plus vat (21%) but I see Island 4x4 are selling them for 75 euro.
Would it affect the engine in the long term to run it without the MAF ?

why dont peeps give sum idea where they are - it wud help when giving assistance to ya problem - yu mite even get an offer of some hands too.

It wont hurt the engine but it'll perform a whole lot better with a new air flow meter

Yep clutchys right,i ran mine fer bout er month ,no problem but mpg was a bit sad. . . .

Hi ming,

Did what you do every year, clean the MAF, I cleaned mine with brakecleaner and seems the car responds better again. Btw, passed the MOT today and not a single remark, green light for another year. Was a little afraid for the tires but they were allok for them. (If not I would have bought BF Goodrich Macadam 215/65x15 98H). Ciao.

ps: you want a picture of the BFG's ??:D :D :D

About 34.800 miles ming, why ?? (Not enough ??) Were the original Wrangler HP of GoodYear. As a matter of fact I checked the following day re the tires and I fou!nd that only 2 mm was left on 3 of them and even less on the 4th, so I ordered the BF Goodrich Macadams anyway, have to phone tomorrow to see when they will be in, after all the winter is ahead and I prefer to have good tires when the road conditions become worse. One slide and some bodyrepair costs more than the 4 tires.
I have to pay 127,5 Euro per tire (makes 85.6162 GBP or 342.4650 GBP for the four, all included).

Yep. . . . Willo mine where about the same [milage] good cost on the tyres though, i bought the mitchellins ,found the front went down first, nice to hear from you . . . . .:)

Hi ming,

As I know you're fond of pictures, here some of the new tires I got mounted this evening. I even got them a little cheaper as I first was told, got them for 125 Euro per piece instead of the 127,5 I was first told. (83.90 GBP totalling 335.60 GBP).

thems nice will, why did yer draw on em wiv crayons tho ;)

how yer doin fella

Hi yella,

Well, while I was waiting in the garage I thought it was a good idea to draw a line. Up till here and no further I said to myself, so .... (for the contrast I took my red crayon Caran d'Ache)...:D :D :D

ps/ Re the tyres, the guy told me I will be able to almost double the kilometers (mileage) I did with the GoodYears, and that for a lesser price, not bad eh ?? (I read in a Dutch 4X4 forum they tested these tyres and they came out very very good, so why not take these and keep some money in my pocket and be sure I'll do more kilometers with it).

you usually find wiff tyres that its a balance between mileage and grip.. more miles = less grip... i fitted a set of super sticky grippy tyres to me masser. it cornered like a train but the rear tyres was ferked after 6 months. i went back on to not so grippy ones after that

Ooops!
