I'm really struggling to find the answer to this rather simple question.

Did land rover themselves ever fit a 2.6L 6CLY Petrol Rover engine in to a 3 door standard 109" for the UK market ?

I'm taking standard series 2/2a/3 here. I know a 2.6L was standard fitment to the 1 Tonne's.

I have come across a series 3 109" (with no one tonne characteristics) that has a 2.6L 6cyl petrol fitted, so I promptly tried to get insurance but the company's don't seem to know of there existence... They seem to class it as a 5 door!?!?

I'm beginning to think it may be a replacement engine...

Thanks for any info!

2625cc, 6cyl, ioev, petrol (nominally 2.6L). 83bhp at 4500rpm, 128 lb-ft at 1500rpm. Used in S2A LWB to S3 LWB including Forward Control.
The engine was derived from a 2995cc (nominally 3L) Rover car engine. The 3L was fitted to some North American (NADA) S3's.

Land-Rover Engines

They were fitted in 109" series 2a and 3's and Iv seen them in 5 door 109"s.

Its quite a good engine for a series really, better on hills and for overtaking when driven correctly and maintained properly. Quite thirsty tho...

Were they ever fitted to 3 door series LR's by the land rover for the UK market!?

Thor1950 you seem to suggest that they were fitted to 3 door 109" models...

So far as I'm aware the six pot was only used in 1tons and FCs.

Could be wrong though

Look at the link I put up, was in 109's s2a and 3's LWB, is not a 109 a LWB? aswell as FC

Put a link if you would look. OP needs to google with the engine there are lots of info, easy to find

I've looked there's nothing to say what variants they were fitted to for what markets.

Google is great but is no substitute for actual knowledge. Lets wait for someone with some better knowledge

Oh iv goggled the engine believe me, its good practice to do so extensively before you work on any engine. I know how rare the parts are, Iv worked on the engine and I have driven a number of miles using one as well...

From my research I have found that they were defiantly fitted to:
Forward control, UK market RHD
1 Tonne, UK market RHD

I have seen one with the owner claiming it to be original factory fitment in:
LWB 109" hard top 5 door 9 seat series 2a, UK market RHD

That's why I came on here to see if they were ever fitted to any of the below:
LWB 109" 3 door 2 seat series 2a, UK market RHD
LWB 109" 3 door 3 seat series 2a, UK market RHD
LWB 109" 3 door 2 seat series 3, UK market RHD
LWB 109" 3 door 3 seat series 3, UK market RHD

I only know of 2 in existence in the above from (one series 2a and one series 3). The insurance company's don't know of their existence in the forms above so I thought id ask and see if they are a true from the factory vehicle...

wouldnt vin show

I haven't checked CALVIN but I'm pretty certain mine's a factory fit. I have the original service book where the engine size is listed, old MOTs stating the engine size, six pot brakes on the front (11 inch diameter, 3 1/2" wide twin leading shoe, it's a 1979 vehicle so pre V8 which also shared the same brakes on the front end), no sign of the bulkhead being chopped to fit the six pot into a four pot vehicle, no sign of the exhaust being re-routed from the RHS (as per four pots) to the LHS (as per six pots).

I like mine, smooth to drive and not quite as thirsty as people often make out, I average 17mpg round the lanes. Mines going to need some love soon, need to find some workshop space for a gearbox rebuild as third whines a bit, the synchro on fourth is shot and the last time I did an oil change one of the detent springs came out with the oil.

Yes the factory did put six pots in 3 door 109's, I have worked on a few over the years.
Also I have a genuine worshop manual that lists chassis dimensions for six pot none 1 ton chassis. Yes could be a Safari 5 door body but it stands to reason that they put 3 door bodies on six pot chassis, they bolt straight on.

being as you're in Oxford (ish) i suggest you pop along to the Banbury Rally at Bloxham later this month, i've organised attendance of the Series2 club stand where we'll have a very smart 109 truck cabbed sixpot with 3/4 tilt

there definitely was quite a few built by landrover as a standard vehicle in 2door, 3door and 5 door layouts, both in S2a and S3 "bonnetted control" form

2 door being pickups, 3 door being van bodied and obviously 5 door being station wagons

Thank you for supporting what I said and linked to.
