Hi All,

New to the forum but I suspect you'll be seeing (or reading) a lot of me in the near future. I've just bought my first ever Defender 110. An upgrade from my 1998 Toyota Hiace I have had for the past 12 years. Sadly the sub frame has rotted out so it's time for a new adventure vehicle - bring in the Defender 110, 2008 2.4 PUMA ex MOD.

I brought him home two days ago and he drove like a dream, 4 hours along narrow Welsh roads and it's official, I'm in love!

Anyway, I want to upgrade my security for obvious reasons! Currently looking at the 'ardcase and a Disklok but I would really like to add an immobiliser and tracking device. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I was looking at 4WD but they have some awful reviews online. Have also seen the Defender Defender but no immobiliser.

Any advice welcome :) Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the forum.

There are a number of immobiliers out there and I imagine quite a few for the Ford engine you have.
Physical security devices abound too but most of these are surmountable.
Your main problem is that you have a smart looking, thus desirable car.

I reccommend that you give it some patina.
A couple of dents/scratches in the wings and side panels and then get a child to paint it with purple and lime green emulsion using an old brush.
Bend one end of the bumper in by 1"
Paint one of the doors Arles Blue.
Badly paint the roof Black.
Throw muddy water over it and never wash it.
Grow some weeds in the roof gutter (near the rear corners is best).
See if you can find some rust coloured paint and schlapp it on the chassis and axles. Paint some holes in the rear X-member.
Weld a few rough cut steel plates on the visible chassis (near the suspension etc) and change the badges to those off a TD5.
Fit alluminium gear knobs and clock/binnacle surrounds.
Fit camo seat covers.
Take any blingy wheels off and put some old rusty eBay special modulars on.
Find a really old 110 with a pants, rubbish ridden, tat filled interior, take photos from outside, print them off and stick them on the inside of your windows when parked.
Change the headlights to cheapie LED's.
Fit Yellow britpart HD suspension and a return to centre shock.
Always park in the same place, ie just over where you regularly throw a cup of old oil.

I appreciate the lengthy list of what appears to be actually sound advice. Sadly, apart from splashing some oil on the ground where it's parked - I am currently not willing to totally deface him! Looks like a couple of layers of internal & a tracker is my second best bet!

Hopefully my fairly protective collie will be enough of a deterrent when we are in car parks anyway!

Everyone here is sooo helpful 👍
True though.
Fit a diskloc, pedal lock (proper one), have a Ghost system fitted if they are available. Lots of trackers available fir differing budgets.
TD5s get stolen also, even farm hacks get stolen so making it look like a bag of s*** won't help.

I use an Adrenalin pedal lock. Tailor made to fit a Puma. Very solid bit of kit. Which ever you choose make sure it fully covers all the pedals, claw type which leave the pedals exposed are almost useless.

Move somewhere where you can leave it unlocked with the keys in it all the time. That way you can sleep at night
That’s what I do

Pedal lock and a disc lock , fit these no matter how quick I’m going to be away from the disco, at home it’s blocked in with two other cars and parked against the wall tight , also has a tracker and a cat 2 Clifford immobiliser , that pedal lock was the best £100 quid I’ve ever spent, it’s an absolute bugger to get the padlock on, and even worst to get off.. so anyone trying to take it off without the key, going to be a while

To be fair, I live on a remote Hebridean Island for 8 months a year - It's hard enough for residents to get the ferry on and off let alone thieves so I am happy there. It's just the other 4 months I take it overseas on a winter camping trip. From what I hear, the thefts are much much worse in the UK than overseas so should be ok.

I do the same for 12 months of the year so saves me buying any extra security

Uk car theft is a joke, it’s blatant, and absolutely no deterrent either, slap on the wrist, don’t do it again.. I’d cut there f…king hands off if I caught someone doing mine, they’d deffo have a few falls to the ground too.. kind of John wick esk stole his car kind of thing…

I've got a pedal lock on its way, I remember how much fiddly they are to get on - worth it though and a nice visual deterrent. Looking for an immobiliser but the Ghost I went for before on my old Sprinter is not compatible with the 08 Defender - Doh! I will look into the Clifford ones...

That sounds like my idea of bliss.. we both plan on retiring in 26 , the idea of being that remote sounds like possibly the best idea ever..
There are pros and cons that's for sure - no crime is a big plus. The lack of any amenities and the fact no businesses will consider postage out to us is slightly annoying... You'd never believe how excited one can get at a simple supermarket visit!!

Clifford are exceptional, got the cat 1 fitted on the bmw which also incorporates key switching off thing so they can’t catch the signals or something that they do now with a scanner. Can bus or whatever.. it’s supposed to be the best they offered at the time, I guess end of the day, if they want it, they’ll nick it.. just make it harder for them

We have ferries and an airyplane that visit every day and a few locally based couriers so deliveries aren’t that much of a problem. Although the wife does have an organism during a visit to ‘proper’ shops 🤪
