Does anyone know why Land Rover stopped fitting the Salisbury axles to 110's in replacement for a stronger rover type diff assembly?
I thought the Salisbury type was far superior in strength to the replacement 110 rear axle and when they swapped in 2002 or whenever they had reports of rear axles breaking.

Probably standardisation. I sure James Martin can tell for certain, but I think the later models shared diffs with the Range Rover and later Discos.

I wonder if making they encountered problems in getting the ABS and traction control working through the Salisbury.

Only interested as I recently had a look under a new 110 and was surprised to see a rover axle at the back. Did some research and found it became standard equipment.

I stand to be corrected but I thought it was due to the cost of the Salisbury axles. A new one cost almost £9000 last time I looked.
thats what they sell them for not what they cost them ,were i used to work we built new axles for lr ,ie non current production at the time ,as 2-300 or maybe just 2 was too smaller numbers for factory production ,lr sold us the parts at cost (to them )plus 20%, most priices when compare to their retail prices didnt bare any comparison
id think salisbury was replaced due to weight as well as cost ,p38 diff been stronger than the defender and disco 2 rover diffs

I would imaging cost and production were the main reasons. The Salisbury is also a copy/based on a Dana 60, so suspect a licensing fee was involved too. Not too mention the real world advantage on a stock 110 was pretty minimal.

Interestingly I believe Dana have been building LR axles for the factory for quite some time. The real shame is why did Land Rover never say to Dana, please junk our weak axle and supply some of your Dana 44 axles with LR fittings.
