Roll out bed

Now then, I've got a 110 hard top. Using it for camping when 'er indoors will let me.

Trying to figure out a way of putting a easily fitted camp bed. I've looked through all the posts I could see and most use plyboard and look really sturdy but I want something light weight and easily stowable. I've come up with a crazy idea to have a canvas roll with rigid carbon fibre sections stitched in so it could be folded up when not in use.

It'd be secured from slipping by some eyelets on upright bolts but would sit across the wheel boxes to distribute the weight.

Plan below - dashed sections are the cf inlays, with the dotted sections being folds. Any opinions welcome, in particular 'fecking stupid because xyz' before I bother spending more time.

Too FN small for me, coz it's not long enough!!

However, if you fasten it down with a tent peg in each corner, it shouldn't go anywhere!

Size isn't a problem in my plan. I'm standing on tip toes to touch 5ft 8

i can see where your coming from ,but it will be big roll to store whereas ply can be easily made to fit and store better

i have a 90, been thinking. what i might do is..
1x old canvas bivvy bed and basically put fixings along the top of the wheel arch. so basically bed will be suspended. obviously feet be sticking out of open door but will erect some sort or awning over the back. that or just a big piece of 25mm ply across the whole back or it and a made to measure soft foam mattress. can make a slide out ply box under to store stuff too. end of trip all comes out and away in garage.

Yeh, there's downsides to the plan. If I was clever enough to come up with table/bed combo that'd be ideal

I thought about a bivi as well, didn't want to put too much weight on the fixings and having tried a hammock recently decided I'm too fat for something without good support. Ply is definitely an option, but I don't want the slide out storage so would need to be some fold up system - preferably a combo table. But beyond my DIY skills For a 90 there's a real good thread on here somewhere showing people that do a ply based bed over the bulkhead into the front.

Yeah saw that, truth be known I am a fkr for fallin out of skinny beds.

Was going to do long box for in the gap so space under ply wasn't wasted and pots n pans can go in it. Only a 90 after all. Basically wanted to make it so could all be removed with no fixings if possible. Most of its life back is full of sizeable chunks of wood.

This is exact;y what I'm looking to do once I've saved up the cash and found a suitable LR (currently arguing with myself over 90vs110...)
I was thinking of one of these:

with some butchery to fix it above one wheel arch on one side of the bed so it would fold up to the side when not in use.
Unfortunately, it's one of those ideas that works really well in my head, probably due to the fact that I have no vehicle yet to try out ideas on so none of those 'real world' issues!
Let us know what you come up with in the end!!

If I were to do it for my 110 hardtop id do it in ply, 3 cuts lengthways and hinged so it can fold out the way and 3 rectangles made from 2x2 to support between the wheel boxes and a foam roll on top and a tarp to throw over the vehicle to keep the rain out

This is what I did using an old futon base, I have now added an inflatable mattress.

joking aside the T4 pic was just to show construction method, the bed is to be hinged on its long side at capping level front to back in rear of 110 , then it all makes sense. with a 90 you would have to make a folding point at approx 2/3 of length to fold back on itself so as not to obscure side window when in stowed position . HTSH

That is a obvious answer then gnome size.
anyone who can sleep across the front seats with a metal frame cot hanging on the windows , and sleep in the back of a 90 and walk around inside is GNOME size

There is only 4'3" of floor length on a 90. Would have to cut myself in half to do that

At 8'6" only a 130 would be any good for you then
